Description
Generation.

(Bottle) Reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Traces of lacing. Malty, smoky nose with dark bread, smoked ham, sauna, coffee and hints of chestnuts. Malty, smoky taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread, smoked ham, orange and a touch of tar. Smoke is less pronounced in the taste than in the aroma. Medium body, with just a touch of sweetness. Very well balanced and more subtle than for example the Shlenkerla beers. Tasty and nice beer.

Bottled. Much more smoky and full-bodied than the lager. A strong tasting beer that will take beginners to the style a little longer to get used to. Full malt and smoked flavor, medium to full body. Good beer, though from a bottle it cannot stand up to the draft lager.

Bottle at Spezial Keller. Deep gold-orange-amber color with a tall, fine, head. Cloudy. Rich aroma of banana, citrus, clove, and maybe a bit of smoke. Dry, fruity flavor with banana, citrus, some smoke and peppery hops at the end. Light bodied. Complex, light, clean, spicy, and nicely sour. Sweet but nicely balanced. Good stuff.

Gravity at Spezial Keller. Light amber color. Tall head goes quickly to lace. Light to medium smoked aroma, rich malts, clean. Light, clean body, with flavors of smoke and minerals. Light, subtle malts, with a bit of caramel. Highly drinkable. Certainly not the most flavorful of the rauch beers, but the most drinkable.

Bottle. Redbrown with a large head. Aroma of mild smokiness, wood, malt and caramel. The taste was mild, the smokiness was pleasant. Also some wood, ham and roasted malt. Not that much carbonation, body about medium. Very drinkable with a light smokiness.

Had this at the Pittsburgh Great European Beer Festival at the Sharp Edge Beer Emporium 6/2010. Such a nice beer friendly place! Looks like a darker pale lager. Some weird smokey flavors. Yes, barn flavors too like an old burned barn or smokehouse. Weird, would not do more than one of these. Interesting to taste but not a repeat. Like tasting an old leather shoe that was too close to the camp fire. Same finish.

Had this at Spezial, Bamberg, Germany 19-06-10. Pours hazy orange/brown with a white head very light smokiness on a wheaty nose. Taste is very light smoky quite a traditional wheat beer but nice though the smoky touches are almost unnoticeable. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Cycled into town (Bamberg) from our campsite just outside at Bug 17-06-10 had this on tap at the brewery tap Pours lemony yellow with a white head. Nice hoppy beer with a steady bitterness, the finish is dry and clean. Refreshing with some lemon flavours. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
