25 oz bottle into lager glass. Date stamped 22.03.11. Hopefully that’s the bottled-on date, but I doubt it. Pours an almost clear copperish-gold hue with a medium off-white collapsing head. Leaves a blanket and ring of foam. Aroma is mild campfire smoke, pepper, baked apples. I’m used to smoked beers being in your face; this is subtle. Taste is sweet and smoky; finishes lightly tangy. It reminds me of smoked ham. Carbonation is medium, body is medium-thin. Very good, but not as good as Aecht Schlenkerla’s Rauchbier.

Bottle from ølbutikken clear amber small light brown head. faint smoke, faint flowery sort of sourness. malts in the aroma. palte is pretty strange, sort of bubbly and soapy flavor is smoked, sweet malty, slightly sourish. dry , almost sort of bretty. (not sure this was intended)

bottle from ølbutikken. spezial rauchbier lager dark orange, smooth quite large white head smoked malts (salt, meat) in the aroma, also ordinary malty notes. flavor is malty, slightly smoked, hops are faint, not flowery or fruity, just a little bitter. palate is quite carbonated and bubbly. harmless smoked that is slightly boring, but i guess also quite easy to drink

[3/1/11] Draught at De Wildeman in Amsterdam. Clear red-ruby color with a stable medium beige head. Aroma of smoked sausages and some malt. Sweetish flavor with caramel, malt, some burnt wood and smoked meat. Medium-bodied. A good Rauchbier.

whew...this isan acquired taste. when given to my wife and asked what she smells, she said honey, and when tasted she said an old wet rag. i smell the smoke and taste smoked sausage. gets easier with more offerings, but still not an easy beer to get used to or really enjoy. one of michael jacksons 500 classic brews.

On tap at the brewery. Dark amber. Thin head. The aroma is bready, toasty with a hint of chocolate. Lightly smokey palate with light breadcrusty malt notes. The finish is a mellow, rounded smokiness. Good beer, probably needs more sugars, more smoke or both.
