Description
In August 1982, our late founder Tony Allen opened Oak Brewery on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port. After much success, he moved nine years later to a location more central to his trading areas. Phoenix Brewery, Heywood!
Phoenix Brewery was registered in 1874, brewing directly from the Brewery tower and owning over 100 pubs in the local area. Phoenix’s history is still proudly displayed on our seven-story tower.
Building upon our strong foundations, we continue to brew Tony’s longstanding classic beers, whilst introducing innovative new brews. The team are looking forward to welcoming you to our Brewery site – soon to be open to the public for the first time in our history!
In 1996 it took the decision to trade as the name of the brewery Phoenix Brewery.

Golden with minimum haze. The original Flight Of The Phoenix was a star-studded motion picture, I thoroughly recommend. I can recommend this too. Slightly above ordinary golden style.

Hand pulled pint in the Mytton and Mermaid (near Shrewsbury) on 26th February 2025. Amber pour, clean and clear once it settled, white crown on top. Slightly more malty than hoppy, semi caramel traces mixed in with a mini citrus fruity bitterness. It's OK and goes well with Fish & Chips!

Cask at Waterhouse, Manchester. Light misted gold with smooth white head. I found this one to have a slightly cloying sweet honey and floral resinous quality to it. There was a nice creamy mouthfeel to it but that didn't help alleviate the richness. Not too keen although its well brewed.

Cask at Anvil, Wigan. Pours pale gold with a small foamy almost white head. Not much of an aroma, just some hints of floral hops. In the mouth it is quite bitter but with some underlying sweetness. Hops are to the fore and their influence gradually increases alongside citrus and peel. Hints of berry fruits and grains later as well. Sweetness wins out in a slightly sticky finish. It’s reasonable.

Cask @ The Hebden (formerly The Pub), Hebden Bridge. Golden with a creamy head. Fruitful with light tropical fruit notes, although it's a lower than average IPA in strength. Nevertheless it's very palatable and flavoursome.
