Description
In August 1982, our late founder Tony Allen opened Oak Brewery on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port. After much success, he moved nine years later to a location more central to his trading areas. Phoenix Brewery, Heywood!
Phoenix Brewery was registered in 1874, brewing directly from the Brewery tower and owning over 100 pubs in the local area. Phoenix’s history is still proudly displayed on our seven-story tower.
Building upon our strong foundations, we continue to brew Tony’s longstanding classic beers, whilst introducing innovative new brews. The team are looking forward to welcoming you to our Brewery site – soon to be open to the public for the first time in our history!
In 1996 it took the decision to trade as the name of the brewery Phoenix Brewery.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours a golden yellow with a small white head and good lacing. There’s malts and oranges in the aroma. In the mouth it is initially sweet and fruity with some underlying biscuit malts. However, bitter citrus quickly cxomes to overwhelm this, and yucky lemon comes to dominate. Finish is yucky sticky citrus. Not the beer for me.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe but have drunk this many times before. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head and good lacing. Malts are prominent in the roma with some honey sweetness there too. In the mouth it is dark fruits that immediately grab the attention. Honey and malts come along later with a little chocolate and liquorice. Finish is quite sweet. A decent enough porter, but not quite as nice as I remembered it.

Cask @ The Corn Mill, Llangollen with Eric, Sylvie and Sophie. Pours a clear golden yellow, small white foam atop. Pleasantly hoppy cask golden ale, firm floral bitteress, fresh, light in decent condition. Ok.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Aroma is malty with a hint of booze. Dark amber. Thin bubbly translucent white head. Light bitter. Jammy sour edge. And a big dose of sugariness. Malty core. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Flat-soft carbonation. Long somewhat astringent finish. Enjoyable if a tad lightweight.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours a slightly greenish pale yellow with a small white head and good lacing. Just some vague general citrus in the aroma. Immediate impression in the mouth is light, sweet and fruity. This resolves to summer fruits with floral hops coming through later plus a hint of ginger. Finish is quite bitter. A simple beer, but done very well – I really like it.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a pale straw with a small frothy white head and good lacing. Summer fruits to the fore in the aroma. Pretty d*mn sweet in the mouth. Flavour has tangerine and summer fruits mixed with floral hops. Finish is dry and somewhat bitter. Nice and refreshing if not particularly memorable.
