Can. Almost black. Roast, coffee and licorice in the aroma. Initial caramel, roast, pipe tobacco, licorice and alcohol in the flavor. Surprisingly Thin.

Spelt beer brewed at Poesiat & Kater in Amsterdam for Peter van den Arend’s Morebeer, in collaboration with a company specialized in grains (called Zonnespelt). Thanks to Craftmember for sharing the can. Snow white, mousy, membrane-lacing, opening head, clear ‘metallic’ orangey ‘old gold’ colour. Aroma of spoiled chervil soup or indeed withered chervil leaves, fried bell peppers, old moldy chicken grains, old bread, manure even, iron – generally not very pleasant, clearly… Cleanly fruity onset, green banana and unripe pear, fizzy carb, slick mouthfeel, dryish grainy and bread-crusty malt body with a wheat-like soapiness to it which probably comes from the spelt; ends with mildly grassy and floral hop bitterness, accompanied by minerally and metallic aspects. Tastes better than it smells, which in this case is a good thing, as something clearly went wrong here – though I am unable to put my finger on it. Needs revisiting but in any case, the way it reached me, it was well below the average quality standard I am used to from Morebeer…

Clear orange beer, big creamy white irregular head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty metallic, bit fruity, banana, malty, grains, hay, cow fodder, meh. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, chemical, metallic, soapy, rather unpleasant. Aftertaste: more chemical, bit rubbery, bit sourish, malty, grains, chemical, don’t like it.

Bottle at semi blind tasting, Zil Verne. Golden color with white head. Pears in aroma and also in taste, with light clove, marzipan. Not bad, bit thin bodied.

Bottle at a tasting, Zil verne. Moderate sourness, quite clean. Also moderate pear presence, seems natural, but also quite simple, one-dimensional. Overall really lacking some kind of complexity, this gets boring after second sip. Med-thin body, high carbonation. Med-light generic sweetness. Average. Not bad, not really good either.

(Draught at 'Cause Beer Loves Food, Amsterdam, 30 Aug 2019) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, liquorice and coffee. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, chocolate, caramel, liquorice and s sweetish finish with a balanced roasty bitterness. Full body, really sweet. Powerful and hardly balanced, but really tasty and warming. Nice one.
