Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

Cask at The Spice of Life, London. Pours clear, golden-brown with a wimpy cream, auguring some poor condition, I suspect. Aroma gives off some woody malts and leaves. Medium sweet flavor with toasted sugar, bitter leaves, dry wood. Light to medium bodied and completely flat. Bummer. Sweet finish, more leaves and wood. Somewhat dry with modest orange rind. Perhaps some condition would breathe some life into this beer, but as is this was not impressive.

Bottle from Asda, Wheatley, 02.02.12 consumed 05.02.12 Pours gold, superb clarity, with a white head, looks great. This will probably benefit from being consumed shortly after the Leila Cottage Ale ale as it is clearly streets ahead of the former. Reasonably bitter, crisp, refreshing with some citrus, lingering bitterness, not bad at all. A6 A5 T7 P3 Ov13 3.4

Deep red colour. Strong fruity aroma. Very rich and silky texture. Flavour is sweet like the juice of dark red fruits. The finish is altogether much drier though giving a nice balance.
