So smooth, very high drinkability.

Bottle: Pours very dark brown with a thick, dark head. Milk, chocolate...slightly oxidized aroma. Very sweet chocolate/caramel malt...lactic, sugary cream. Too sweet....cloying and unpleasant.

Can. Nose is roast, slight smoke, toast. Taste is smoke, sugars slight lactose leading to coffee and a little caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. It’s a northern classic and in the dark days of beers in the 90s it was a reliable favorite, but is ultimately quite ordinary. .

Draught in some random bar, Rome, December 2013. Needed a 9% ABV blast after drink sour craft beers all afternoon elsewhere in Rome: this did the trick. This is just a hangover in waiting really: however I’ll be fair with my scores and words. Looked good, clear, bright and clean: a true golden brew with a full if thin white head. Grainy nose and taste, the alcohol barely hidden within the weak flavour. This is the sort of beer that gives Scotland and Tennent’s a bad name.

In tap at the Cask and Barrel. Appearance - amber with a decent head. Nose - toffee and resin. Some cream. Taste - more of the same. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish. Overall - another solid ale. Years since I’ve had this.

Canned, 500 ml, London UK. Strong alcohol taste which ruined it for me. Malty and metallic. Had trouble drinking this one. Wouldn’t have it again.
