Description
Alaska has a rich history of brewing. From the explorers of the 1700s through the Gold Rush, many a thirsty Alaskan has been able to enjoy locally made beers.

In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Bottle. Another beer I had in Vegas. Deep amber color. Caramel malt aroma. Taste was more toasted malts than hops. Rather liked this beer even though not great.

0.65 l bottle shared at home. Pours black with beige head. Nose is-of course-smokey, with some sweetness. Taste is quite the same with long finish. I expected it to have more apparent porter notes, but it’s lovely nevertheless.

650ml bottle, 2009.
Aroma is nothing but smoke!! Sausages, soy and smokey bacon. Flavor is a mix of big smoke and loads of piney hops. The pine just covers your palate and the finish. Long dry bitter finish. Pretty nice stuff!!

Amber color with a tan head. Toasted bread and floral aroma. Taste is sweet caramel with a crisp, dry finish. Rich with a little hop bitterness and a hint of wood.

Bottle from a grocery store in Bridgeport, California. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, toffee, with a touch of dried fruits and nuts. Flavour is sweet and light bitter. Body is medium. A bit on the sweet side, but not bad.

Bottle 2018 edition. Blackish with a small khaki head that has good retention. The aroma is old smoldering campfire. The taste is what you expect in a good smoked beer--lots of smoke set in a moderately bitter ale base Finishes long with lingering smoked meats. Overall: A winner.
