Brasserie Artisanale et Didactique du Flo

Microbrewery in Hannut, Liège, Belgium 🇧🇪

Established in 2002

Rue du Château 21, Hannut, 4280, Belgium
Description
The name Brasserie du Flo originates from the locality located just in front of the town hall. At this place was a body of water, the size of which varied according to the seasons and which was called 'Le Flo'. The Confrérie de St. Antoine (Brotherhood of St. Antoine) has had its own beer brewed since 1978 (Cuvée St. Antoine Brune). The beer was brewed for years at Brasserie du Bocq in Purnode and then at the Van Steenberge brewery in Ertvelde. In December 2002 a private microbrewery was established in the former town hall of Blehen.

After being at a standstill following the explosion of a tank in 2017, a new project (still under the wings of the Confrérie de St. Antoine) is being set up where the quality and the didactic aspect are put forward. A young team of enthusiasts will invest in modern equipment to relaunch the brewery.

Upon opening, a fontein gushed out of the bottle. Alvinne has become an icon if it comes to gushing ( though this is a problem of the past , since they fixed it ) well guess what... THIS IS WORSE. I saw it coming ( its not my first beer by them ) so opened it above the sink. It was a 33 cl bottle, and i Poured it within a tenth of a second from opening the bottle. Yet , about 30 cl was gone. 30 that was paid upon purchase of this beer. 3 cl left to drink. Thats just great. If it were not for fast reactions, the bottle would have been empty by the second. Thats a great start ! I hope the brewers are proud of this... Yeah, overall is all set- even before smelling or tasting the beer. This is inexcusably BADLY BREWED. If any of the brewers read this, I am happy - as always BTW - to re-rate upon having a non-gushing bottle ( if those even exist ) but i WILL NOT pay for this kinda crap again. Now, the beer itself ( or whats left of it ) Pours hazy blonde, small white head. Smell is infected and honey sweetness. Not a great combo. Taste is supersweet, hints of infection and yeah, even some sourness in a bad way. Very yeasty, sticky, some butter. Overcarbonated ( still, after exploding like dynamite ) . Awefull beer allover... Thumbs up guys, but dont quit your dayjobs...

bottle at home, on my now fucked up table... GUSHER !!!!!! havent had this bad gushing since alvine... high fontain and half of the bottle gone. Poured one glass out ( half foam thank you very much ! ) and the bottle still is overflowing. Now flakes of malt are covering my table, and all my paperwork on it. What a good start ! The huge white head collides and leaves out yeasty markings. Clearly, the gushing in this one logically disturbed the whole damn beer.. Smell is .. Well... a lot like alvine used to have in those tripel-style beers with the houseyeast... Its so alike, its scary. Taste is bitter, sharp, buttery yeast , as mentioned by expectations, this beer is pumped up with carbonisation, on an unearthy level... Rather dry beer, especially in the ending. the taste itself isnt to bad, but rather blank. Anyway, will NOT try this one again ( at least, for sure not at home ) since I’d rather have a shower in another place than my kitchen. 3,5 would be the regular score, let the actual given score tell you how pissed I am about yet another gushing failure...

Dark brown. Quite a lot of cinnamon and ginger cake in the aroma and flavour. Flavour also has some sweet red fruits. Too much cinnamon.

Sampled at Kerstbierfestival Essen 2014. Dark ruby reddish - brown color, no head. Smell and taste malts, herbs or spices, sweet, lightly alcohol. Average to medium body and carbonation. Drinkable but too herbal and spicy for me.

Flo’s first, with a creamy, relatively thick, snow white head and darkish peach blonde colour with chestnut hue, cloudy. Aroma of peach, orange, pineapple, coriander, honey, candi, caramel. Sweetish taste with clear presence of candi sugar, flowery, light malty basis, finishing with too little hops and too much lactic acid, the regrettable result of an infection, ruining the whole tasting. I am convinced this young micro brewery is quietly doing a good job so I will certainly re-rate this hoping to find a bottle without bacterial infection.

Christmas ale from this young brewery, based on Cuvée du Flo Brune with cinnamon added. Aroma of overripe grapes, dried plums, cinnamon, hazelnuts, dusty yeast, star aniseed. Fruity, malt sweety taste with sufficient, not too agressive spiciness and lightly toasted malts in the finish. Not bad.

GUSHER ALERT!
Clear blond to orange beer, lots of small chunks in the glass, huge aery fizzy off-white head, dissipates quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: sousish, bit dirty, lemony, chemical, vinegar, pretty bad. MF: overload of carbon, medium to light body. Taste: bad, sourish, unpleasant bitterness, orange peel, pretty dirty. Drain pour after the first small sip, but took another one just to give another chance. Really undrinkable, this one...

750ml bottle split with Anndiesel. Murky orange-tan..the last quarter of the bottle much darker. Kind of quirky Belgian aroma, some clear age on it..a little oxidized but still effervescent. Fruity and mild, with some nice classic Belgian carbonation. Sweet, not unlike an amber at times. Honey, orange, apple cider. Kind of mediocre for a Belgian beer, but would be curious to try more from this brewery.
