Brasserie Artisanale et Didactique du Flo

Microbrewery in Hannut, Liège, Belgium 🇧🇪

Established in 2002

Rue du Château 21, Hannut, 4280, Belgium
Description
The name Brasserie du Flo originates from the locality located just in front of the town hall. At this place was a body of water, the size of which varied according to the seasons and which was called 'Le Flo'. The Confrérie de St. Antoine (Brotherhood of St. Antoine) has had its own beer brewed since 1978 (Cuvée St. Antoine Brune). The beer was brewed for years at Brasserie du Bocq in Purnode and then at the Van Steenberge brewery in Ertvelde. In December 2002 a private microbrewery was established in the former town hall of Blehen.

After being at a standstill following the explosion of a tank in 2017, a new project (still under the wings of the Confrérie de St. Antoine) is being set up where the quality and the didactic aspect are put forward. A young team of enthusiasts will invest in modern equipment to relaunch the brewery.

33 cl. bottle @ home. BBF 06/2015. Hideous label. Slow gusher which is a bad sign to say the least considering that I just had to drain pour the blond because it was infected beyond drinking. Orange peel amber, amber I could say, agreeable creamy white head. Nose is murky old rotting orange peel, brett, lactic sour, old yoghurt, American sour beer bacteria gone bad, rotting fruits, beer that has stood very long outside with contaminated fungus / mould etc. Rotting sweet, sour oranges, fermenting peaches, brett, unwanted sour infections, mould, fungus, expired aspirin, medicine, yoghurt, candy sugar, light sweet bark, bitter band-aid,… Bit fuller, messy body. Sort of drinkable & not as terrible as the blond but I have had 3 of their beers. All 3 of them were infected to some degree. I don’t want to be mean but this just f***king sucks. Might be more tolerant towards them if this one was the first one I tried from them. This is not really acceptable to be honest – avoid these guys unless if you are a very compulsive ticker.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured @ Willems. No BBF. Pours a hazy orange with a thick whipped cream, white head, solid. Nose is oddly lactic, yoghurt, like an American sour but not in a good way, sour milk, brett peaches, milky, white bread dough, this cannot be right? Taste is bitter rotting mould, thick fermenting bread dough, rotting fruits, bitter esters, floral, strongly lactic, spoiled milk, spoiled yoghurt,… Too high carb. No there is no way that this is correct. Infected (I hope, otherwise wtf?), I cannot drink this & I am a tolerant guy when it comes to beer. Previous two reviewers also note that theirs was infected, not a good track record.

8/V/13 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: 16/V/?? (ink is a smudge at the year indication) (2013-448)

GUSHER ALERT!
Cloudy red brown beer, aery beige head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Lots of big chunks in the glass. Aroma: very fruity, strawberry jam, sourish touch, vinous, red wine. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel, sweet and sugary touch, some dried fruits, alcohol touch, chocolate, bit of mocha. Aftertaste: chocolate and mocha, sourish touch, more dark chocolate, bit spicy, liquorish. Probably infected by accident, hence the gusher, but it works in this beer. One of the best Cuvée du Flo's I've had.

G U S H E R 33 cl. bottle @ home. Pours a very murky reddish brown, brief beige head. Smell is light soy / meaty, overripe dark fruits, malts, light sourness,…. Taste is coffee grounds, soy, dark bread malts, chocolate chewing gum and some wine-like sourness. Infection seems indeed likely – echoing the other reviews. Close to flat. Bit of a mess but an enjoyable one.

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy, effervescent golden coloured hue with a big and slightly off-white foamy head. Yeasty, fruit-accented aroma with notes of citrus, apricot, accompanied by flowery hops and a delicately spicy touch. Mildly sweet and slightly sour flavour, light bodied with a spritzy carbonation. Very fruity, mainly citric taste with yeasty and spicy notes; moderately dry, quite spicy and sour-fruity finish with a tinge of floral hops. 14.I.13

22/I/13 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: III/13 (2013-87)

Clear orange beer, lots of dark sediment falling to the bottom, irregular white head, unstable, little adhesive. Aroma: lots of green apples, citrus, sourness, bit infected (?), tobacco, sugary, Turkish delight. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sugary, some citrus, green apple skin, apple juice, bit sourish. Aftertaste: little sour, fruity, sugary, apples sauce, little bitter. Ok for a fruit beer, but nothing spectacular or particularly beery or balanced.

16/I/13 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: II/2017 (or 2013? smudged ink) (2013-25)

Clear yellowish to pale orange beer, crispy crackling white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, ripe to overripe apples and pears, hint of banana, something off, bit yeasty. MF: ok carbon, light body. Taste: very fruity, apples, pears, still something off. Aftertaste: still fruity, bitter apple skin, little sour, watery, alcohol noticeable (with only 4.5%? that' s weird..)

Small white rim over coppery-golden beer. Spices, coriander in particular, dull. Dreary dull-grainy to malty flavour, but finishing more spicy. Medium bodied, slick. Nothing special...
