Brasserie Artisanale et Didactique du Flo

Microbrewery in Hannut, Liège, Belgium 🇧🇪

Established in 2002

Description
The name Brasserie du Flo originates from the locality located just in front of the town hall. At this place was a body of water, the size of which varied according to the seasons and which was called 'Le Flo'. The Confrérie de St. Antoine (Brotherhood of St. Antoine) has had its own beer brewed since 1978 (Cuvée St. Antoine Brune). The beer was brewed for years at Brasserie du Bocq in Purnode and then at the Van Steenberge brewery in Ertvelde. In December 2002 a private microbrewery was established in the former town hall of Blehen.

After being at a standstill following the explosion of a tank in 2017, a new project (still under the wings of the Confrérie de St. Antoine) is being set up where the quality and the didactic aspect are put forward. A young team of enthusiasts will invest in modern equipment to relaunch the brewery.

33 cl. bottle sampled @ Kerstbierfestival Essen 2013. Only 500 littre made, t he booklet assures me that this beer is without any imperfections or infections something which they didn’t feel was necessary to say about virtually any other beer, honestly I do not really feel the same as they do. Reddish dark brown with little mocha bubbles for a head. Nose is pretty strange (infection?), spices, anis, reminds me a bit of Pastis, old sticky candy, thick herbal,… Biter herbal & mouldy taste, something off, touch watery, caramel, thick anis, herbs, something decaying. Touch watery & flat body. I feel like this one is another one of their brews suffering from issue, either way whether or not this is the case, I am not the biggest fan here.

Bottle shared with Dutchdrebus, Joes, Martinus and Countbeer @ weekly tasting. Clear golden color, medium sized instantly disappearing off-white head. Aroma is sourish fruit and artificial. Tastes about the same: sourish fruit, slightly sweetish as well, apricot, apple. Fizzy carbonation, average body.

33 cL bottle. Gusher. Pours hazy brown to dark orange with a small off white head. Smooth brett, toasted malty and fruity. Light leathery note. Solid carbonated. Smooth fruity, mild honey, brett and fruity. Lingering dry bretty finish. Not sure it was intended this way, but quite nice bretty mild honey flavoured brew, sadly way to carbonated.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Purchased at Willems en Zoon. Small gusher – no surprise there. BBF 02/2013 – purchased quite recently. 2011 vintage maybe? Tropical fruit orange, some fading bubbles but pretty much no head. Smell is child vitamins, expired aspirin, exotic fruits, medicinal & smells like a chemistry schoolroom. Ehh… Taste is plastic exotic fruit juice, dried plaster, plastic, old medicine, chemistry lab, expired child vitamins, bitter herbs. Like juice & higher carb. Has issues just like their other brews, not sure if these guys should be commercial. Not that bad.
