2006 vintage, bottle no. 29815 - Great, proper English barley wine. Taste is slick, smooth and malty but not overly sweet. Has hints of raisin and caramel. Alcohol warms nicely.

Cask at the Metropolitan Bar, JDW. Pours clear gold with a creamy head. Faint malts in the nose with wimpy flowers and plastic. Sweet flavor to start, tangerine juice, light bread, some earthy bitters and more hints of plastic, though they fade as I drink. Light bodied with fine, smooth carbonation. Mostly sweet finish with little bitterness, touches of rusty metal, some juicy citrus and hay. Perhaps this is poor conditioning. Seems like the beer could be better.

Cask. Pours an almost opaque black with a vague tint of red and a rough beige head. Discreet aroma of hard roasted malt. Medium-bodied, low carbonation, sweet hard roasted malts and dark dried fruit. Some malt bitterness. 281110

A dark reddish copper ale with a thick frothy moka head. In aroma, wet dough with light vinous qualities, treacle, quite nice. In mouth, a smooth dark malt with light molasses, woody notes, light maderization, overall quite nice. Bieropholie import. BB 26-12-2009.

A golden ale with a super thick frothy off white head. In aroma, light grassy malt with wild grasses. In mouth, a smooth sweetish malt, with faint signs of hops. light acidity, but overall, a light pleasant ale. Bieropholie import. BB 7-7-2009.

Cask (handpump) @ Charlies Bar, Pilestraede 33, Copenhagen, Denmark.Clear medium to dark amber color with a average, frothy - fizzy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caraeml, nutty, fruity, light to moderate hoppy. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, dark fruit, nutty, mnalty, hop bitter, licorice - anis seed notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20101122]

Bottle purchased from Utobeer, Borough Market, Southwark, London 13.11.10 consumed 20.11.10 Pours ruby red, maybe a little brown, some haze and a thin rim of bubbles. This is a monster of a beer, plenty of wafts of alcohol and a light hoppiness. Sweet rich, and a little cloying, however it’s very nice. Nice rich christmas fruits and nuts soaked in spirits, yum. Would pair well with a nice cheese, I’m sure that most would go with a stilton or something similar I would like a very good cheddar. Whilst this is thick and cloying at times and would be better with some age, it’s still very good. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6

Cask at the Rake. Pours cloudy gold with a sturdy white head. Nice hop aroma with hay and caramel. Fairly sweet, with light malts then a balanced, earth and hay bitterness. Medium in body with fine carbonation. The finishe is medium hoppy with light sugars. Nice beer.

On tap at the Rake. Hazy red amber beer. No head. Smooth dry palate. No carbonation. Rich sweet porty malt with typical vinatge port leather and tobacco tones. Some sweet orange buried underneath. A pinch of salt and aniseed in the dry finish. Bitter marmalade aftertaste. Very nice indeed!
I’ve heard a couple of people compare this to Thomas Hardy - I don’t get it! There is no marmite here! This barleywine is very porty, more porty than some beers aged in Port barrels! 3.9

Pigs Ear. Cask. Sold as Brewers Reserve 2010 Vintage. Clear deep brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth and slightly sweet malts, nice touches of cream and caramel. Little wood. Lovely blend of Port Wine and Brandy. Rich marmalade and mild red berries. Orange peel and a little sherry on the smooth finish. Mildly spicy linger. Superbly well joined up, rich and fantastically well aged. I ended up having a pint and a half. Big thanks to Keen Massey for spotting this rare survivor from the turn of the decade.
