Bottled (2005 vintage). Reddish brown colour, minor head. Aroma is plum, grapes, caramel malts, raisins and some toffee. Also alcohol gives a nice sting. Flavour is redwineish, a lot of grapes, berries, plum, alcohol. Long alcoholic finish. Just a lovely balanced thing.

A dark brown to black stout with a thick fluffy moka head. A rather strong Brett aroma, herbal with notes of chocolate, bitter and roasted. In mouth, a bitter chocolate appears clearly, a bit herbaceous, but no porto noted in this. Medium bodied. Bieropholie private imports, early 2006. BB 03-05-2007.

Bottle, picked up in Sainsbury’s. Pours mid brown with a very slight haze, some nice gentle malty and spicey notes. Taste is very pleasing, again malts and spices and a nice richness with good bitterness levels a really nice beer and certainly one of the better seasonal oferings tried so far this Christmas.

500ml bottle from Sainsbury. Reddish chestnut, lasting rocky beige head. Good strong hop aroma, lovely choc malt in mouth. More of the green hops and aromatic hop on end too. Rather and excellent bitter. O’Hanlon really do make some fantastic beers. Rich and full in the mouth. Carbonation is just right. That green earthy hop aroma, really is quite lovely.

2005 bottle, 11.7%. Very malty, peppery, creamy and roasted aroma, with some dried fruits. Quite complex aroma. Cloudy dark red/brown colour with a small light brown head. The flavour is very sweet. Has some sweet fruits, dried apricot. I sensed a little aroma hops at the beginning, but now they are gone. Very pleasant, peppery aftertaste. Low carbonation. 7 3 8 4 18

Bottle, 11.7%. Quite oxidized aroma. Clear dark brown colour. No head. The flavour is also oxidized, has a nice woody sourness. Tastes well-cellared, but very good. 8 3 8 3 17

It’s quite difficult for me to like these kind of beers. They obvious have some quality, but it is a complete different style of liquid than what I refer to as beer. But nonetheless, I try to rate it for its taste, not for what it’s supposed to look like. But i’m just not a fan of this style. Just like the harvest ale, taste is quite strong, bit vinegar like, very malty as well, but not in a pleasant way like an imperial stout.
