Description

As St. Georgen Bräu Alkoholfrei. Clear golden with a foamy head. Cardboard, lemon, NA notes, lardy, liver sausage, cat food. Sour. Light bodied, watery texture, lively carbonated, sour finish. Crap and a disgrace that this is labelled as a St Georgen beer.

Hopfenweizen of sorts, basically Veldensteiner Weissbier hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, one of those new German hops based on the success of New World hops around the world; at a Greek restaurant in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria. Thick and creamy, eggwhite, pillowy, membrane-lacing, stable head on a hazy deep warm peach blonde robe with orangey glow. Aroma of fresh orange peel, mandarin even, banana, clove, lemon bread, hay, blue limestone, pear and hints of lemongrass and - oddly - wet clay. Fruity onset, banana ester of course but overshadowed almost by the tangerine- and mandarin-like character of the hops, making for an even fruitier effect with even a brief hint at lychee; softish carb, fluffy mouthfeel, wheat-sourish core with sweeter bready barley, carrying lovely clove-like phenols as well as that citrusy effect of the Mandarina Bavaria, which also adds a mild grassy and floral bitterness, a bit more outspoken perhaps than in the regular Weissbier but still subtle - so if this is to be considered a Hopfenweizen, then it is one only in the aromatic sense, not so much in the bitter sense. Very aromatic and summery - the new generation German hops are cleverly applied here.

Bavarian Hefeweizen, from tap at a Greek restaurant in the Oberpfalz region, thanks Goedele for sharing! Off-white, moussey, stable, quite thick head on a hazy peach blonde beer with beige-ish tinge. Aroma of banana bread, strong clove, moist white pepper, dried peach, brioche bread, hint of grass, pear. Sweetish onset, pronounced banana ester with hints of ripe pear and dried apricot, softish carbonation with soft fluffy mouthfeel; bread-doughy core edged by wheat sourishness and slickness, but the wheat flavour is just a tad less outspoken than it could have been. Retronasal clove and vague white pepper phenols as well as a chlorine-like touch, paired with mild grassy hop bitterishness and ongoing wheat slickness. Not on a par with the great classics in the Hefeweizen genre for me - lacking a bit in character and finesse, though still enjoyable enough for what it is.
