Tried at the royal hop pole Twekesbury. Deep dark Amber body with creamy off white head. Aroma has roasted malt, as with the flavour, which also has a touch of cocoa.

Bottle split at Nutty’s house, thanks to JF, 04/10/14. Hazed orange amber with a decent off white covering. Nose is bitter tropical fruits, light mineral vibes, grapefruit, straw. Taste comprises citric peel, orange pith, pink grapefruit, straw. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with earthy hop bitterness. Decent enough APA.

Bottle split at Nutty’s House, thanks to James, 04/10/14. Black with a decent tan swirl atop the glass. Nose carries roasted tones, lactic tang, cocoa nibs, trace of vanilla but maybe only picking that up due to the title of the beer? Taste comprises chocoalte, dark malt, subtle roast, more vanilla than the nose, sweetish tones. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent well rounded porter.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Bristol Beer Factory’s Factoberfest, September 2014. Near black with a slight, off-white, head. Dark chocolate, roasted malts and sweetish vanilla aroma. Full mouth feel, with toasty mlats, some subtle vanilla, leading to a dryish finish. Enjoyable.

Earl of Essex. Cask. Clear amber beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry, again the EofE dusty feel. Light malts with a trace of unsweet toffee. Tired ripe orange. Light dry finish. Tastes knackered.

Pint on tap at the Royal Hop Pole JDW, Tewkesbury. Cask, The Colour is deep amber with a very thin off white head. The aroma has nutty malt, but not the hops I expected. The taste again disappointing with not the level of hops the lable said. More traditional bitter and as such very drinkable.

Cask at the E of E, 10/09/14. Clear golden orange with a moderate off white covering that dissipates to edgework. Nose is orange squash, soft bread dough, straw, citric peel, subtle hop notes. Taste comprises toasted malt, light spice, faint pine, bitter orange, earthy hop notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a hoppy wash at the curtain call. Drinkable but a little 1D and lacking any real hoppy punch for the style.

Bottle from Brewer’s Droop, Bristol. Slightly hazy amber in colour, with a short-lived, off-white, head. Massive, tangerine and grapefruit aroma with a touch of creamy maltiness. Flavour was also fruit-packed, with some pine in the background and a mouth puckering, dry, finish. Very good.
