Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

AOBF 2004 Draught. Probably my second or third favorite at the festival. Pours a deep peach/apricot orange with some light rusty brown hues on the edges. Small yellow-beige head, moderately hazy. Aroma of rich sweet yellow fruits, caramel, wheat and yeast. Flavor is immediately intense. Sweet, succulent caramel and wheat, with a balancing sharpness coming from the big fruit esters. The yeast apparency, which is like a mix between sour german yeast and belgian yeast adds a very unique element to this beer. Towards the end, it dries out a bit and gets very creamy with some vanilla cream flavors making their way in. Finish is pretty quick and clean, surprisingly, with lots of apple-like flavor and almost a cidery feel to it. I really enjoyed the mix of fruit, yeast, wheat and malt at the start. Even though it is a bit too sweet, I thought the flavor was very interesting. Body is full, tending to medium on the finish.

Another decent seasonal from Sam Adams. This beer is a reddish-mahogany color with a medium thin tan head that disappeared slowly. Quick lacing. The aroma is malty with a slight smoke character. Smooth and rich body with a big malt profile, along with caramel, chocolate and hops. There is also a creeping alcohol presence. The finish is very sweet malt and molasses. Not a world class Doppelbock but a nice full and easy to drink beer.

A mediocre wit but pleasant none the less. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a cloudy bronze color with a small white head. There is a mild scent of wheat, citrus and spice. The flavor is dominated by the wheat with a light mustiness and hints of citrus, honey and faint spices. Mustiness, citrus and honey linger on the finish.

Hefty price tag on this one but it is a pretty good beer. Pours a dark brown color with a nice ruby glow. Medium thick beige head that lasted a little while, and thin lacing. The aroma is chocolate of course, with a roasted character to it. Medium body with a lot of chocolate in the flavor but it doesn’t become annoying. Malt and roasted coffee are present here and there too. The finish reminded me of a brown cow, which is like a Boston Cooler (root beer blended with ice cream) but with chocolate ice cream. I think you are paying a premium on the packaging on this one, but it works as a one-off for me.

Beautiful amber color. Quite good, mainly characterized by the caramel, with a more clear hoppy note in the aroma and a bold final, but a bit too metallic.

Sam Adams' seasonals continue to be their stronger beers in my opinion. None of them are below average and a couple are really good. This beer is a slightly hazy light orange color with a medium white head. Quick lacing. The aroma is lightly spiced with some citrus as well. Crisp body and very lively and easy to drink. Bittersweet spice flavors of pepper and clove, along with citrus and a pinch of vanilla. The finish is somewhat wheaty. While not on par with some of the better Wits out there, this is a perfectly nice seasonal.

Finally pulled this one out of the "cellar" (i.e., my apartment coat closet). A nice surprise! I did not find the chocolate overbearing or cloying. Although the chocolate/cocoa flavors are the main attraction, this is also toasty with a touch of caramel and a tangy woody hint. Very smooth and creamy. Light, but in a good way. Worth $15? Probably not, but the bottle's cool :-)

Hazy light orange/yellow colour with a super-dense tan head. Aroma of lemon, wheat, sugars and a bit of coriander seed. Light-bodied; Light tart taste with hints of metal-nothing special. Aftertaste bittered and unrefined-a sub-par wheat. Overall, not really worth trying-cherry wheat is better, so is the weiss. Thanks to Phil (haddon90) for bringing a bottle of this up for me! I sampled this beer on 12-March-2004, purchased from Giant in Manassas, Virginia as a six pack of twelve ounce bottles.

Very dark brown coloured body, almost black with a nice dense medium-sized brown head. Aroma of CHOCOLATE and some coffee with pit fruit noticeable. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong chocolate flavours, full of sweetness and a strong malt backbone run in this bottle with some light vanilla tastes. Aftertaste is purely heaven...nothing offensive, just pure sweetness and a great mouth-coating way. Overall, a great beer...it took me by surprise, but one that I wish I had a case of! I was lucky enough to sample this from the 75 cL bottle purchased by Phil (haddon90) at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia...thanks VERY much Phil!
