Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Beautiful deep burgundy beer; light-amber, small head. Vanilla, strawberry, syrupy malt, almonds in the nose. Bitter taste, roasted malts, sweet is there but underlying to the bitterness - a flavour much like bitter almonds. Syrupy mouthfeel, full bodied, oily. Alcoholburn. Less bready than its German counterparts, much more alchoholic-almondy, brandy-like.

This is really an underrated brew. Not a regular for me but certainly a very nice change of pace beer. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a deep reddish-brown color with almost no head. There is a strong sweet cherry scent vaguely reminiscent of Dr Pepper. The flavor is sweet, spicy and wheaty. The cherry is a little subdued. Overall this beer is highly reminiscent of Dr. Pepper. I rather liked this one, but then again, I really like Dr. Pepper too.

Dark black color, some brown bubbles, no head. Aroma of alcohol, coffee, molasses. Taste is of pure chocolat, coffee with some milk, heavy alcohol, pure oil. Very thick sirupy texture, we call it 'stroop' in Holland. Alcoholic palate. This is just total crap!

2004 bottle. Bright orange gold, MINIMAL Haze (almost a joke), good white head. Aroma of coriander, lots of wheat and a mild clove. Definitely some lemon rind in there. Flavor begins wheaty with a big peppery coriander kick, more lemon coming through on the body, which is medium-light. Finishes quite acidic for the style, with a big astringency coming from the very dry spicing. Little sweetness is found in this beer. Dry, subtle clove flavors on the finish, maybe a touch honey and dried apricots. Too acidic on the finish though, needs better malting. Rerate. 2004 Draught. Worse than I remember even. Not crisp, nor very clean, muddled meaty spice flavors, and too much unbalanced coriander. Wont be drinking this one again.

Clear amber orange color, big rocky off-white head, some carbonation. Aroma is hoppy, but also caramel malty, some resin. Taste is dry hopbitter, caramel malty. Dry finish. This beer could use some refermentation in the bottle and then it would be a very nice belgian ale!

A Boston Lager and a Boston Ale...interesting. This ale was fairly rich and nicely hoppy with some earthy, perhaps a touch caramely malt body. Reminds me very much of the lager of similar name.

I've been casually looking for this beer for awhile and finally found it today. Pours a clear, deep red-brown with a minimal off-white head. Aroma is of caramel and raisins. Flavor is very sweet, with loads of caramel, some dark fruit, raisins, and alcohol in the finish. Full-bodied and sticky on the lips. The only real flaw is that the thick malts create a very sugary flavor that masks some of the more complex depth.

This lager pours a orange colour with a frothy white head. Very metallic scent to it. Doughy scents to the nose along with some malts. Initial taste is a little watery but then kicks in with a sharp taste of hops and malt. The palate is a little bitter with a strong hop flavour.

$15.00 for a bomber! Pours lightly and fizzy with extreme carbonation, large bubbles coating all sides of glass, bottom of glass, and rising as a large bubbly soda-pop head, fastly fading. Color is red-tinged brown. Aroma is mild, with a definite baker's chocolate note, some ash, some caramel, and a hint of metal. Front is remarkably non-sweet, with a clean clear chocolate flavor dominating the middle and finish, which is notably dry. A possible cookieish graham cracker flavor is also apparent. If this is a bock, its likely based off of their caramel malted Sam Adams Double Bock, which, like this beer, lacks true Munich malt melanoidin components. As the beer warms, the caramel flavors become more pronounced and remain on the palate for some time - dominating the aftertaste after the dry chocolate finish fades. The body wants to be full, but the strong carbonation carries it quickly and fuzzily in the mouth, fortunately with little bite. The beer seems to flatten quickly in the glass, losing its liveliness and approaching cloying. A pretty decent beer, and while the ingredients may have been expensive and the process time-intensive, it's not worth a repeat visit for the price.

Appearance is very dark brown, nearly stout-like, with an impressive lacing - aroma of cocoa, cream, roasted malts, even a touch of vanilla - body is quite thin, but the flavor nearly makes up for it - dominant flavor is, of course, chocolate, milk chocolate to be exact ("ice cream soda without the ice cream" is pretty on the money) - some bitterness compliments the chocolate flavors well - some caramel, coffee with lots of cream in it - despite the thin body, a momentary silkiness is generated before the somewhat watery finish - chocolate flavor that starts off lingers in the finish, bookending the taste experience - I have to agree with slob and say that this beer didn't live up to my expectations - it's good, but it doesn't warrant being a "special limited edition" beer - yeah, the bottle is neat, but it kind of reminds me of civil war paraphernalia, and for fifteen bucks, they'll be lucky to get a repeat customer with this.
