Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

12 oz bottle-pours a thick, rich tan head. Color is a deep amber. Taste is OK, just not my style.

12 oz bottle-pours a light tan, rich head. Color is a clear gold, carbonation looks good. Taste is crisp, a nice blend of malt, hops, carbonation. Just a slight bitter finish.

Surprisingly good for a Sam Adams. Almost black with ruby coloring. Lacing, and a fairly large head that never quite disappears. Coffee and raspberry aroma. Flavor is complex, coffee and chocolate, and lying underneath is smoke and light fruit. Heavy body.

Bottle. Hazy amber with a small off-white head. Big banana aroma. Some banana/clove flavors and not a lot of wheat. Refreshing and easy to drink.

Bottled. Black opaque, brown mediumsized head. Toffee, caramel and burnt oak in aroma. Strong wooden flavour with hints of old coffee, also some soapy notes. Rich carbonation ruins the palate a bit.

Bottle from Sainsbury, Ashford Golden brown colour, pours with a good off white head. Acidic malt nose, some flowery hop. Slightly creamy in mouth. Surprising for an american lager with a good mix of caramel malt and hops. Good balance and dry tangy finish 3.1/5. Rerate August 2012. had al ot of this from France. Good.

The Brewmasters Series from SA is usually a pretty good bet, and this is one of the best I’ve had in that line. But I love Schwarzbiers too! Pours with a tight foaming head, an attractive glowing purplish brown in the light, nearly opaque. Aroma of clean and well integrated dark malts, some caramel, some bittersweet chocolate. Flavor much the same, leading to a well crafted dry finish, although a slightly iron like bitter finish lingers for awhile. Quite drinkable, if less complex than of the great schwarzbiers.

Bottled. Well, I’ve done too well with the bottled, American made wits I’ve fouynd so far--guess it’s hard to balance between the needs of mass production. This wasn’t too bad, though. Malt flavor is kind of light, but there’s a decent spiciness working its way around. A slight touch of citrus a little later on. It actually had a bit of an alcoholic buzz, too.
