A deep dark stout with a thin lacing brown head. In aroma, a rather meaty chocolate with iron notes, floral mentholated hops, very pungeant. In mouth, a nice smooth bitter chocolate with some funk, floral pinhey hops, a bit of menthol, beautiful. Sampled at Bierkraft, Dec. 27 2011.

On tap. Pours with a mildly hazed copper hued body with a stray, fading, off-white head. Aromas are of alcohol, burnt caramel, toffee, sticky, overripe fruits, orange, marmalade, and a bit of herbal, nearly minty (hop?) notes (northern brewer?). Flavors are of caramel, herbal, sweet toffee. Super malty. Very long duration. Orange, ripe fruit, sweet, estery, alcoholic. Syrupy on the mouthfeel, with medium bubbles. Warming. Big body on this one.

On tap. Pours with a near black body with reddish-brown highlights. Spider lacing from the tan head that has decent retention. Aromas are of caramel, estery, floral, brown sugar, fruity, caramel, currants, and light roast. Flavors are earthy and sweet, nutty, fudge, cocoa, roasty, soil, floral and roasty. Coffee grounds. Medium bubbles, not very creamy, medium body with a light alcohol tinge.

On tap. Pours with a deep brown body with some orange highlights. Lasting (possibly nitro?) tan head. Aromas are of coffee, nutty, bready, cocoa, espresso, earthy, dusty and perhaps a twist of orange peel. Flavors are bready, nutty, earthy cocoa. Very mild roast. Smooth. A bit watery though. Nice malt character, a touch of leather, medium to light bodied, creamy. Easy drinking.

On tap. Pours with a hazy golden orange hued body with a fully retentive white head and sheets of lace. Aromas are of orange, citrus, cascade, grapefruit, floral hops, a bit herbaceous and grassy as well. Medium bready malt aromas with a tinge of caramel. Clean. Flavors are citrus, orange, tangerine. Old school American IPA flavors. Medium bitter, grassy, malty, bready and light caramel. Lively bubbles, medium bodied. Decent.

On tap. Clear bronze hued body with a retentive/lasting off-white head that leaves good lace. Aromas are of mild esters, fruit, toffee, caramel, bready, grainy, tea and a light orange hoppy note. Flavors are grainy, biscuity, bready, nutty, tea, caramel and orange. Light citrusy hops. A bit sticky on the palate. Full carbonation, medium bodied. Generic amber. No flaws, but not very interesting.

On tap at the Radio City location. Surprisingly good. Pours with a crystal clear, slightly deepish yellow hued body with a lasting, small white head. Aromas are sweet, bready, citrus peel, orange, zesty, maybe some cascade hops?. Lightly grassy and a touch spicy. Flavors are quite zesty, surprisingly pleasant. Grainy and crisp. Bready, biscuity, grassy, wheat/grainy, orange peel, tangerine zest, coriander. Lively bubbles, bright, sessionable, dry, a bit minerally. Pleasant. Actually one of my favorites there.

I assume that this is similar if not the same to St. Gowanus so I’ll let a local admin alias it (it is listed as Belgian Pale Ale on Kelso’s website). On tap as Kelso Belgian Pale Ale (5.5%ABV). Pours with a hazed golden orange hued body with a thick, massive off-white head with good lace and retention. Aromas are of orange, very mild esters and phenols, musty, hay and a straw like malt profile. Kind of boring. Flavors are nicely phenolic yeast up front, sage, earthy, peppery and mildly hopy. Straw and grainy malt structure. Lively bubbles and dry. Interesting beer that is not distinctly any style (I wouldn’t call it a traditional Belgian Pale Ale). Good.
