Description
Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

It is beer that’s based in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted in locally, plus ingredients sometimes locally foraged but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world. Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and Dave Cornell took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well and the strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant nowadays as it was from the outset of the brewery.

Bottle from Beermoth, Manchester. Hazy, dark pink hued, amber colour. Thin, lasting, white head. Damson jam. Blood orange. Pink grapefruit. Taste is where the fusty, yeasty, tartness comes in. Some bitterness, too. A tad of damson jam sweetness in the mix, at the end. Yep, another good beer from this brewer.

Hazy deep amber - brown beer, decent pale cream coloured head. Palate is airy and slightly dry. Unusual beer! Starts with a minty medicinal vibe. Then light floralness and a touch of.spice. Smooth dry finish, mild bitter linger.

6th April 2014
Murky dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is airy and a little dry. Fine carbonation. Mild dark malts, touch or roast. Thin malt cream. Little spice, mild smoke. Touch of berry fruits before an airy dry finish. Decent enough but not as well integrated as it could be. Flavours bump up against each other rather than forming a cohesive whole.

660ml bottle. Pours dark chestnut brown with a foamy tan head and aroma of chocolate, roast malt, smoke & slight hop. Roasted malty flavour with powdered chocolate, smokey & coffee notes and some tangy fruity hop bitterness. Fairly smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation, roast bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle from the brewery. Just about clear, copper colour. Thick, tight, lasting, white head. Well done, white loaf crust. Some fauna. Hint of white wine vinegar. Just a hint, mind, and a very light, smoky, herb character. Taste is light, sharp, dryness. Yeasty, fustiness on the finish. Very good.

Bottle, Beer Moth, Manchester. Hazy amber pour with a fast fading bubbly off-white head. Somewhat unappealing nose with some fruit and spice notes. Flavour had some citrus and spice in tandem with some rustic hop bitterness and a bit of sourness. Not without some good qualities but a bit rough around the edges.

Bottle from courtsey of Ang’ (cheers mate) consumed at home Tuesday 18th March 2014 Pours dark reddy/amber with beige head, slightly hazy but otherwise pretty good clarity. Good smokiness a little well cooked smoked sausage. Really smokey in mouth, tangy, wonderful beer, heavy maltiness but the smokiness comes through, a little woody. Quite soft in the mouth, strong but not to the detriment of the beer. This is a great beer, loving it, cheers Ang’ A8 A5 T8 P4 Ov16 4.1

Bottle from the brewery. Hazy, conker colour. Thin, tight, lasting, tan coloured head. Roast malt. Light cocoa. Light smoke. Hint of blackcurrant cordial. Light, piney, hoppiness at the end. Taste is forest fruit, juicy, sweetness. Lots of smokey dryness. Lingering, light bitterness at the end. All nicely balanced. I haven’t had anything other than really good, interesting, complex beer, from this brewer.

Bottle from the brewery. Clear, bright, copper colour. Huge, rocky, off white head. Bready. Brut Champagne. Light sulphur. As mentioned below, stewed tea. Taste is raw bitterness. Mouth stripping dryness, too. Decent amount of carbonation makes a palate cleansing, astringent, no prisoners taken, kind of beer. Some sourness on the finish, with the raw, bitter, dankness lasting an age. Then, right at the end, a light, honey sweetness pops out of nowhere. Mad as a room full of Pugs. Liked it.
