Description
Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

It is beer that’s based in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted in locally, plus ingredients sometimes locally foraged but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world. Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and Dave Cornell took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well and the strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant nowadays as it was from the outset of the brewery.

Bottle split at Bruce’s Pad, big thanks to Kenny for this obscurity, 12/06/14. Murky dark orange amber with a moderate beige swirl/covering. Nose is dark malts, dark fruit rinds, dogs collar, Frankincense, earthy notes. Taste comprises toffee, dark fruit, peppery spice, earthy woody pangs. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, drying close. Decent enough fayre. Huuuge write up !

Bottle courtesy of Geraint & Helen, thanks you two! Had this on holiday at Camping La Paz, Nr Llanes, Asturian coast, Spain, Monday 16th June 2014 Pours orange heading towards amber with a pillowy white sticky foamy head. The aroma is strughling ti compete with factor 50 suntan oil at the moment and sadly its losing, so let us move onto the taste. The taste is just a little tart, funky and spicy a streaky lightly citric spicy fruitiness, Loz gets smokiness agian from a Poppyland beer but I don’t, perhaps a touch of smoky malt? I like these beers, thanks again to Geraint & Helen. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Kenneth for procuring this curiosity. Bottle #38/50. Pours hazy brown with a tan foam head. The nose has spices, leather, old wood and aged berries. Light to medium sweet flavor with dirty malts, some hammy meat, more old berries, worn-in leather, rotting wood. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish with lots of aged wood, old leather and dried berries. Novel.

Bottle, big thanks to Kenny. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, wood, brown bread, dirt, aged stuff, attic and a touch of cocoa even. The taste is wood, earthy bitterness, dirt, mild citrus peel, grass, leather, spice and toast with a dry finish. Medium+ body and average carbonation. Interesting stuff for sure.

Bottle from the Bacchanilia, Mill Rd, Cambridge, consumed at Frank (camper) Cabbage Moors campsite, Great Shelford, Cambridge, Monday 9th June 2014 Pours hazy amber with very little carbonation. Aroma is a little smokey, taste is bitter curly dry orange with a furry finish. Loz gets Islay but I don’t, it is good though, however I think I like it much more than Loz. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6

4th June 2014
Hazy deep amber beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and crisp and dry. Mild fine carbonation. LIttle generic floral sweetness. Fresh elderflower on top. Light tangy orange peel. Light finish. Nicely joined up saison with a great touch of fresh elderflower.

Thnx to Man-Ki Pours orange , small white head . Smell is smokey Taste is bitter , smoked , bitter aftertaste . Surprisingly enough , none of the 5 beers tasted today by this brewery are drinkable . The artwork is pretty nice, but that does not justify the whopping overpriced-character here . Like 7 euro’s a piece at the brewery itself ? This is probably one of the worst breweries one could imagine . I mean, respect for everyone , but these beers are not made for consumption. If a beer fails, than you must be manly enough to admit it failed , and not sell it for 5 times the price of a Good beer !

Thanks. 375 ml. bottle sampled @ “Poppyland Sucks Tasting” @ the Barely legal tasting room. Cork flew into the sky, this one didn’t taste to different from the others, I am figuring that this one has once gain infection issues because surely nothing should taste like this & I am getting the same nasty flavours in all 5 of their beers. Pours a hazy golden with little white head. Nose is bitter hay, medicinal, ether, orange peel, faint smoke and some bitter herbal EU hops. Tastes bitter oily, medicinal, tangerine, sweet sugar, ether, smoke in the finish, some herbal EU hops which make this one at least more tolerable. Thin & fizzy. Sadly this was my #100 Saison.

Thanks. 375 ml. bottle sampled @ “Poppyland Sucks Tasting” @ the Barely legal tasting room. All 5 Poppyland beers that we tried had notes of smoke, medicinal fare etc. I figured that they are infections and all 5 tasted awful, this one uses specifically the word smoke on the label, seems to me that they clearly know that there is something wrong with their beers. Once again this one is gluten free. Hazy golden with a creamy white head. Nose is smoky & medicinal with some sweetness, sugar and hay underneath. Tastes smoky, ether, disinfectant, bitter hay in the finish, herbs and touch lactic fruits. Fizzy, tastes pretty much the same as the dry-hopped saison that we tried after this one which should be another sign that this isn’t alright.

Thanks. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ “Poppyland Sucks Tasting” @ the Barely legal tasting room. Pours a reddish dark brown with an off-white head. Smells lactic, smoky, sour, grains and grounds. Tastes of soil, lots of rotting spoiled vegetables, medicinal, smoke, sour, rotting, discarded coffee grounds, ashes, lingering aftertaste of rotting vegetables, picking up more specifically also some very rotting green paprika here. Fizzy thin body of an infected beer. Worst of the 5 beers & easily one of the worst beers that I have ever tired. The fact that the bottle says that this is suitable for vegans which is cool is the only redeeming feature that I can find about this beer.
