Description
Brewing ceased in April 2022. A Shropshire brewery has shut due to "unfavourable trading conditions".
The Wood Brewery was founded by Edward Wood, his brother and his father in the outbuildings of the Plough Inn in Wistanstow, Shropshire in 1980. Wood’s was one of the founding members of the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) and a firm supporter of CAMRA. At a time when there was a surge of keg beer companies flooding the market and threatening the existence of traditional English ale, Wood’s championed the traditionally brewed product and ensured it remained a firm favourite in the county.
Wood’s has been at the forefront of Shropshire brewing since then and continues to be after it was taken over by new owners in 2018. The new owners have worked with the existing team to make a range of impactful and progressive changes to the brewing process and quality control, to ensure that Wood’s beer is of the highest possible quality. By continuing to make consistent and innovative products, the brewery can remain successful in an increasingly crowded market place.

Cask @ Manchester & County, Manchester. Chestnut-red with a frothy head. Has a nice winter warmer texture without feeling its strength. Has a few malts, with chocolate the most prominent flavour, and can be found in both its aroma and taste. Has a dry aftertaste.

Cask handpull at County Hotel Spoons Ashford. Kind of half way through a half pint and I like it. Sweetish toffee red fruits. Some good pepper hops on the finish. Good I thought.

Cask at the Monks Retreat, Reading. Mahogany-black in hue with a beige head. Creosote, ribena, and smoked meat up gront. Blimey, that’s a bigger punch of flavour than I expected from this brewer. Coal fire and more blackcurrant follows, with the blackcurrant leading the way by the end. Can’t imagine the average Spoon’s punter liking this but I was quite impressed. Verdict: hell, yeah!

Cask, on gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol October 2015. Dark brown in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Toasty malts, a touch of berry fruit sweetness, tangy milk chocolate and a moderately dry finish. Good.

Cask at the Windlesora, Tourist Town, 30/10/15. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a well appointed tan head. Nose is light chocolate, spice, trace of wood must, toffee. Taste comprises earthy notes, slightly fusty, dark fruit rinds, herbal rinse, dark malt, background charr, trace of peppermint. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close. Ok if a touch overly earthy and carrying a herbal linger.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Dark mahogany, almost black, with a thin cream head; aroma of well roasted malts; rather thin with some bitter chocolate and coffee flavours; and a dry finish. A reasonable stout.

Penderel’s Oak Spoons. Cask. Clear dark red - deep amber beer, a few white bubbles. Smooth palate, very mild carbonation. Smooth malts with a tangy caramel and a mildly sweet lactose - cream. Trace of coffee and dark chocolate. Smooth finish brings a little toffee. Tasty enough.
