About
Brewing ceased in April 2022. A Shropshire brewery has shut due to "unfavourable trading conditions".

The Wood Brewery was founded by Edward Wood, his brother and his father in the outbuildings of the Plough Inn in Wistanstow, Shropshire in 1980. Wood’s was one of the founding members of the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) and a firm supporter of CAMRA. At a time when there was a surge of keg beer companies flooding the market and threatening the existence of traditional English ale, Wood’s championed the traditionally brewed product and ensured it remained a firm favourite in the county.

Wood’s has been at the forefront of Shropshire brewing since then and continues to be after it was taken over by new owners in 2018. The new owners have worked with the existing team to make a range of impactful and progressive changes to the brewing process and quality control, to ensure that Wood’s beer is of the highest possible quality. By continuing to make consistent and innovative products, the brewery can remain successful in an increasingly crowded market place.

On tap somewhere in London! Clear amber beer. Semi soft palate, dry. Well balanced. A little creamy malt and just a reasonable amount of fruit from the hops. Not bitter. Fresh and drinkable if pretty vanilla.

Spoons Fest. Clear amber beer. Dry palate, a little soft. Dry and slightly bitter malt and the pleasant red fruits - subtle raspberry and strawberry on the back of the tongue. More dry bitterish malty follows with a trace of hop. A little unusual, less dryness would have elevated this. Enjoyable nontheless.

Much more malty in its aroma and flavours than the name would suggest it is.

2 Pints: hand pulled at The Crown Inn, Oakengates on Saturday 31st March 2012. Mid-brown/amber body, clear but not bright. Off-white head of foaming bubbles sat on top. No great smells, a mild blend of maltiness and citrus hops wafts up from the brew. Slightly more malt than hop feel to the taste although the mix changes as the mouth drys and the beer warms in the glass. Another fine beer from one of my semi-local brewers.

Full name is W.P.B Athletes Ale: William Penny Brooks: is where the WPB comes from. He was the founder of the Wenlock Olympian Society: his picture is on the 500ml bottle I have in front of me. Best before the end of Oct 2012: poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 9th May 2012. Pale amber body, bright, clean and clear: full off-white head on top. Good healthy nose of orange/grapefruit citrusy notes with malty molasses in the background. The taste is a reverse of the aroma: malts ruling the roost with the hoppy citrus flavours arriving towards the end of each sip or gulp. Well balanced and easy to drink: another good beer from a fine brewery.
