Description
The Brewery Michael Plank was established in 1617. It is a small, family owned business that is now under the direction of the 16th generation Michael Plank.

The current Michael Plank is now the brewmaster and is credited with honing the traditional recipes to their current levels which have led to the company being named as the "Best Small Brewery in the World" at the 2006 & 2012 World Beer Cup! That makes Plank the only brewery to have been awarded this World Beer Cup....twice.

Plank Weizen. Cloudy peach colour. The mosquito floating in it was a nice touch. Strong footy nose with stewed peaches. Sweet, slightly flowery accent. Bleh...just a muddy, unkempt wheat of no positive distinction.

Bottle (previously known as "Hadmar"): Amber coloured, mid-sized quite persistent white lacy head; fruity, slightly dark-malty nose with a touch of toasted malt; sweetish-bitter, slightly sourish flavour, light bodied; short malty-fruity finish. Not very good.........

Bottle ("Helles Lager" on the label) Clear, greenish golden coloured, bigger stable white head with a good lace, moderate grainy and distinctive barnyardy nose; moderate sweetish-bitter flavour, light bodied and a bit fizzy; some bittering hops show up in the dry, fruity finish. A good thirst quencher, delivered by joss...........

Bottle, imported a couple months ago, drunk on 10/19/07
Large, blossoming, dark-beige head settles out and slowly recedes to cover, leaving light lacing. Clarity is high, leaving the sediment behind. Body is a deep chestnut with darker chocolate notes.
Sweet and malty in the nose, with notes of raisins and bananas that give way to a light roastiness, dotted with pepper-like phenols. The poignant fruity notes up front (the raisins, some plums and such) really improve the complexity and balance well the sweeter caramel-toffee malts. Some doughy/bready yeast on the end cuts the aroma short somewhat, only leaving sparse roast and bananas to linger. No alcohol is noted, nor any flaws. Medium-high strength of aroma.
Sweet, but tapering off quickly, is the maltiness, with breadiness asserting itself over the soft toffee/caramel sweetness. Add in the moderate to light amounts of roast and it comes out lightly chocolatey. Carbonation is medium in strength, and not quite as tight as I would like, leaving a little looseness on the palate. Creamy banana notes are smooth and not overdone, thanks to this fine yeast that must be culled from weihenstephaner stock. With warming, plums and raisins add light vinousness, which is tremendously complementary to the sweet toffee and chocolate notes. More like a hefe weizen in body and texture (though obviously somewhat sweeter), but it improves drinkability. No flaws or alcohol noted.

A very nice bock. Different from the thick and heavy doppelbocks I have had recently like Andechs, but almost as good. Simple but good straightforward malt, fruit, and caramel aroma. Fairly thick for the style. Flavor has more malt and caramel. Sweet. Dark gold color and just a little hazy with a substantial white head.

2007 (assumed) bottle from Downeast Beverages, drunk on 8/4/07
Big, creamy, white head is rocky and leaves moderate lacing. Pale golden color has hay and maize tints, with tiny bubbles and plentiful sediment on the bottom. Clarity is medium to medium-high (I dont mix the sediment in). Strong retention.
Lovely crisp, hoppy, light nose is full of vivacious herbs and spices, with strong wheat character and only minimal bubble gum. It seems like a light take on the style, but that’s fine and all the more enjoyable because the light aroma notes (soft spices/herbs, light esters and clean water) are all abundant. Very minimal vanilla, and mostly a light, somewhat grainy barley character to the base malts, with moderate sweetness. No alcohol or flaws.
Highly effervescent carbonation for the style, especially being that it’s bottled, though manageably tight, really helps sap the sweetness and highlights a flavorful mineral element to the beer, with succulent spices emanating from the hops (lemongrass, starfruit, wildflowers, lilacs) and a surprising lack of wheat blandness/chewiness/heaviness (whatever you want to call it). The malts are fresh and grainy, adding to the crisp, dry, drinkable nature of the beer. With warming, honey-cream sweetness emerges, in moderation, to give a bit more substance/body to the beer, as the carbonation simultaneously subsides. Clove and banana are present but modest. Terrific yeast! Much like Weihenstephaner’s. Can’t wait to try the others from Plank!
