Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

650mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out loads of fresh coffee, a touch of cocoa and roast. Flavour is rich, with loads of fresh coffee, accentuated with minor cocoa and roast notes. The coffee is used so well in this. Lots of depth, with just the right body. Excellent.

I’m apparently on a roll for first rating the Barn Owl series, two for two now. The nose is a very soft pine, barely-there apricot, and oddly a little new car. Pours what i think is a cloudy gold with a thick white head, but since I’m sitting on the porch in the dark of a power outage you have to forgive me if I’m a little off. The taste is cream, a little vanilla, a touch of resin, and a very mild laco-tang, that fades into a tongue-hugging bitterness. They’re right it’s not a sour. It’s only alright but not earth-shattering. I look forward to seeing the feedback from my fellow RB’ers.

Draught@Moeder Lambic, Brussels. Black colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is liquorice, some fruits, mild chocolate, alcohol and some slight wooden notes as well. Flavour is very similar, with the liquorice, alcohol and sweetish wooden notes making a good and tasty base for it.
