Description
Leroy Het Sas : The original brewery "Het Sas", later Brouwerij Leroy, established in Boezinge in 1572; destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in 1924. Named after a lock ('sas' in Dutch) in the nearby canal. Cooperating with Van Eecke (Leroy Breweries Watou) since 1962. Both breweries merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016.

Leroy Watou : Established as a castle brewery for the count of Watou in 1624 and also known formerly as Brouwerij De Gouden Leeuw. Has long been connected to Leroy in Boezinge through family ties, with both breweries cooperating since 1962. They merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016; the Watou branch now does all the actual brewing (while Boezinge handles conditioning and bottling).

From the website:

Bottle. A dried cherry and musty malt aroma. Cloudy orange-brown color with slight head. Slight sweet orange and cherry flavor - slight chocolate with a bitter hips finish. There is a strong metallic flavor if very cold. Pretty weak for the style but tastes okay.

(Bottle 33 cl) Aged sample - age unknown. Slightly hazy, amber golden with a small, white head. Malty, sweet aroma. Pronounced madeirazation with soft, sweet caramelish malt. Notes of overripe - almost rotten fruit. Quite vinous. Yet manages a wee hint of hops in the finish. 221005

Initial good yellow-brown head, very fast gone; clear red-brown beer, with cola-like carbonation. Wood, bread, lactic acid, parsley, woodstainer, fruity aromas. Again very dry woody taste, tannines obvious, lactic acid, but in the taste, there’s definitely some sweetness underneath. Without the tartness from the wood, one could call it fruity, now it’s more like some wild fruit that is not quite considerable for consumption. Vinous, but not overly so. Retronasal some more fruity notes (fresh prunes), but also liquorice. Quite dry, but despite the acids and the dryness, even dry-out effect, there’s a certain slickness. Medium bodied. Another Rodenbach look-alike. Far from bad but there are some lackadaisicalities .

A light amber beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet dusty, while the flavor is sweet and with primary notes of straw. It is missing acidity for the style - it seems a bit old.
