Bottle, best before 9/11/15, from Downtown Wine and Spirits, drunk 9/1/15.
Quite a lovely pour, being a magenta-mahogany, nicely bright and with a light tan head that recedes quickly to cover/ring.
This is quite the intriguing beer, all told. What it dosent have is a bunch of underfermented, sticky, syrupy sugars or any booziness. Even the lactose is fermented out, leaving just a touch of tartness/sourness behind. The roast/coffee character is medium-light, having no old/beany/stale notes, nor any heavy dominace of the palate. Carbonation seems appropriate and the body, while somewhat watery, is soft enough and glides down fairly easily. Quite drinkabl, but what I’ve been building to here, is that the vanilla is just out-of-control. Not that it’s syrupy-sweet or artificial, it’s not at all; the actual vanilla flavor is quite enjoyable and real, but it’s just too much. Astringent and dominant, it takes over the beer, especially with warming, as one should allow a stout to do. At the end of the glass it’s almost all I smell and taste.

12oz bottle from Downtown Wine and Spirits, best before 9/25/15, drunk 8/8/15.
Medium sized light beige head tops a dark copper-brass body showing good clarity. Head retention is medium to medium-low.
Cluster-like hoppiness in the nose shows light conifer notes, dry lime zest and lots of floral, perfumey dryness. Malts are dry, bready and laden with light caramel while a fruity yeast is persistent (cherries). Maybe not the most cohesive aroma but it’s serviceable.
The flavor seems to be a throwback to the old New England IPAs. Definitely a lot of English influence, with plenty of medium malt character, more sweetness than probably it needs and fairly low bitterness. Still, some light grapefruit/orange and cherry character is interesting and mildly pleasing. Earthiness builds up, with crunchy/crusty malts and more lighthearted fruitiness on the end. Well, at least you can’t complain about it being resinous, boozey or overdone! Though, if you’re looking for an English/American IPA hybrid like this, Mystic’s Wigglesworth just puts this thing to shame. Watery texture, lively carbonation, no alcohol noted.

22 oz. bottle purchased at the Beer Store, Nashua. Deeper brown/ black color. Aroma is a nice mix of vanilla, roasted malts and light coffee. Real nice.
The flavor starts again with the vanilla and turns into the coffee on the backside. The bitterness is in the form of coffee. The body is medium with a nice creamy texture and a nice smooth velvet feel. Really nice sweet stout. Recommend on a fresh bottle or draft.
