750 from Tanakaya. Malty, spicy, lightly funky nose, chocolate, berries. Rather closed nose. Deep reddish brown, clear, with lace. Rich malty flavor, chocolate and caramel with spices: I notice something curry-like. Spices are not all that huge, though. Lightly fruity, cherry and orange. Nice balance, nice body, full but still light enough. Just lacking a little something to reach greatness. Opened up nicely as it warmed. A very pleasant and drinkable spice beer. Spice was stronger in the second pour, as it seems to collect in the bottom.

Süßlicher, deutlich hefiger Beginn. Angenehm herb, ab dem Mittelteil bitter werdend, hier kommt auch eine leichte Alkoholigkeit auf. Trockene und leicht Säure zum Ende, Traubennuancen. 12/11/13/11//11

Taster from the draft menu at Open Baladin. Clear, amber coloured body, naked surface. Intense and delicious smoked aroma, just like my Islay Smokehead whisky. The flavour profile does not follow suit with a rather ordinary malt-fruity taste with peaty notes. Herbal hoppy finish (Roma, 31.03.2012).

Tap, 100ml sample at Open Baladin Roma. Amber-gold appearance, laces quite well. Floral hop aroma, as well as a spicy bite. Fruity taste with lemony hops joined by a little bit of honey sweetness and herbal bitter dryness towards the ending. Refreshing (Roma, 31.03.2012).

Draft. Muddy brown color, no head. Aroma of spoiled grapefruit juice and mud. Tastes like falling into a mud puddle with your mouth open.

750 ml bottle @ RBNAG-11. Hazy amber/orange body with a small off-white head. Strange aroma of ripe (close to rotten) fruit and perfume, as strange as it might sound – not really unpleasant, just weird. Flavor is strange as well, overripe/rotten fruit, spices, some malt and apple cider. Medium body. Very unusually and probably not by intention, still not undrinkable and I think it’s becoming more like a mix of a spicy saison and well matured apple cider. Would really like to try it as it was intended to be.

Sampled at the DC Local Tasting a 1.5L magnum pours a hazy, mahogany brown with some spitty white head. Nose is boozy, rum, cane sugar, prunes, dark candy. Flavor is sweet, boozy, candy sugar, plums, rum, some spice, some tropical fruits. Full bodied, sweet, boozy finish. Well balanced.

750ml capped bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. Almost no head, just a little bubbly lacing with a dark brown, almost black color. Appearance is flat and so is the feel of the beer. Ohhhh, a la Lost Abbey - whack!!! Aroma is full of the adjuncts. I get tea and coriander....and stale old malt. Flavor pretty much the same. Nice adjuncts and the aged malt works well with the beer. However, it’s flat, old, and dead tasting. I’m glad I didn’t pay for this bottle- but also glad I tried it. I would like a carbonated bottle that wasn’t quite as old. I like my beer with less cardboard...and more carbonated... is that so hard?

Capped 750 from Domus Birrae. Pours gold with a foamy off-whitehead. Aromas of perfume and earth. Med minus body. Flavor is earthy and floral. Hop seems to be noble. It’s a bit light, but tasty. Finishes dry and fairly bitter.
