2012 edition.

No sound when I popped the cap, it’s a very dark brown, almost black, with a very fine layer of foam.

The smell has some Port like aromas coming from it...dark fruits, and a sweetness to it that seems to come with all Port like brews.

Made with candi sugar and it tastes it. That kind of drowns out the promising Port flavour I expected from the smell. There’s a strange hop bitterness that I can’t quite put my finger on but it isn’t all that forward so that’s okay.

Medium bodied with surprisingly little heat coming from the ample abv. I sense no carbonation.

All in all, it’s pretty good but NOT at +$19 for the 375ml bottle. I know, no one forced me to buy it but I had to check it out. ;^) --- Beer merged from original tick of Geisha on 12 Nov 2014 at 14:24 - Score: 7. Original review text: Some Port, a lot of candi sugar, the alcohol is hidden in the taste pretty well. Worth +$19 for the 375ml bottle? I don't think so.

Cloudy brown - red beer, good creamy head. Sweet malt nose. Soft smooth palate. Sweet caramel malt with some toffee. Figs and dates when the beer is cold. As it warms up there is honey, guava and traces of red wine and aniseed. Smooth creamy finish. Tiny bit of bitterness in the aftertaste. Delicious!! Unusual and highly drinkable!

Cloudy amber beer, big frothy white head. Light dry palate, a little frothy. Fresh and crispy. A little citrus under some nice aromatic and mellow ginger. A few other spices. Crispy dry finish. For a spiced beer this is not bad at all.

750 ml bottle courtesy of dazz3. Pours very hazy pale golden with a rather big frothy and fluffy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of sticky lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is spicy with crackers, plums, dry soil, cedar, dark grapes, woody tannins, white pepper, allspice, lemon zest and orange zest. Taste is dry, tiny tart and very spicy with crackers, dry soil, cedar, cloves, allspice, lemon zest, dark grapes, white pepper, hay and grapefruit rinds. Mouthfeel is dry, tiny tart, watery and light bodied. Finish is dry and tart with crackers, dry soil, cloves, lemon zest, hay and allspice. Quite nice and refreshing but a tad bit too spicy dry.

750 ml bottle courtesy of dazz3. Pours very hazy amber with a frothy offwhite head that leaves a small sticky trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, fruity and perfume like with sweet dark bread, orange peal, grapefruit juice, mango, resinous wood, marzipan, cherries in brandy, lemon juice, dark grapes, grass and hints of pine. Taste is sweet and slightly malty with sweet dark bread, cherries, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, red apples, marzipan, red wine and grass. Mouthfeel is slightly crisp, slightly tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is slightly sour and tart with biscuits, dark grapes, wood, sour cherries, crackers and grass. Quite tart which I think adds depth to this beer.
