Description
Shane Swindells began Cheshire Brewhouse in 2012, but has been passionate about beer and the joyful sociability of pubs from an early age — ‘beer was special, it was the stitches that held the fabric of society together’. Home is the historic town of Congleton, where it is based on a small industrial estate in the Dane Valley, close to the greenness of Congleton Park. Using bespoke-made brewing kit that makes 2880 pints per brew, Swindells produces an award-winning and vegan-friendly range of beers that can be enjoyed in cask, keg, bottle and can. As well as its historic recipes, Cheshire Brewhouse produces a superb range of modern craft beers that resonate with the bright colours and tropical fruit aromas of American hops such as Citra and Amarillo as well as English varieties such as East Kent Goldings.

Bottle: Nose is smoke, treacle, brown sugar touch of espresso at the base. Taste follows the nose with smoke, leading to dates, a little cocoa and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is too thin. It’s a reasonable stout that verges on the porter in places.

500ml bottle @ the Fourth Shrewsbury Bottle Share April 2014, thanks to Luc. Pours a dark brown with a dusty autumn leaves aroma. Lots of toasty malts and a pleasing bitterness that verges on complex. Quite nice.

Second beer of the fourth Shrewsbury bottle share on 28th April 2014. Bottle conditioned, so poured carefully into six glasses trying not to upset the sediment too much. Came out a brown colour with an off-white crown. Toasted and roasted malts lead the way in the aroma and taste, some hints of chocolate maybe, mild bitterness within the flavours: a pleasant if unassuming brown ale with enough alcohol to keep you interested.

Bottle during the London Bimble, thanks to L-Doggg. It pours golden-amber with a small white head. The nose is spearmint, doughy, cereal, toast and earth. The taste is bready, earth, toast, grapefruit, grapefruit, lemon rind, peppery and some astringency with a dry, somewhat spicy finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. So-so.

Courtesy of Leighton (cheers Leighton) at Brew by Numbers, Bermondsey, Saturday 26th April 2014 Pours hazy gold amber filmy head. Soft in mouth a little hoppy buzz. Starts ok if a little slow to get going but certainly gets better with some buzzy hops increasing in intensity. I like this brewery, had a few from them know and all been decent. Bottle, from Barley & Hops, Cafe Bar, Congleton, Cheshire, courtesy of dad (cheers dad!) consumed at mums Worcester, Saturday 5th April 2014 Pours dark brown, really quite roasty but also quite bitter haven’t really read label but it tastes something akin to a black. IPA (actually now just bothered reading it, it is a BIPA) Some pine resin in mouth and quite citrussy with a little sweet pink grapefruit coming to the fore. A good solid malty backbone, ensures that this is a strident and somewhat muscular and robust black IPA, I have to say I have enjoyed everything I’ve had so far from this brewery and this is certainly no exception. This isn’t too pushy on the hop front in fact it’s just right, good stuff. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

500ml bottle from Beermoth. Pours a tanned brown, with a pleasant mix of tropical hops that aren’t overpowering. Has a touch of lemon curd that mellows a distant bitterness. Overall a decent pale and nice introduction to this brewery for me.

Bottle, from Barley & Hops, Cafe Bar, Congleton, Cheshire, courtesy of dad (cheers dad!) consumed on Eurostar to Brussels, Wednesday 26th March 2014 Described as an American Brown Ale. Fairly straightforward but well done Brown Ale, chewy but with some hidden hops, soft in mouth, some toffee, lots of chocolate and a little spice. A decent beer from Cheshire Brewhouse, 5.8% but easier to drink than you might expect, its nice and tastes stronger than it is. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
