Manchester Beer & Cider Festival 2016. Hazy mid-brown in colour. Extremely smoky in its nose, very smoked in its taste too. There’s lots of ham flavours here.

Manchester Beer & Cider Festival 2016. Black with an off-white head. Hoppy in the main, with some dark malts providing an edge to the light tropical fruitiness that exists within the ale.

Bottle. Beer Stop, Dronfield. Clear, cola brown. Film and some bubbles of lasting, tan head. Nose has savoury, meaty smoke. Chocolate malts. Charred wood. Soft berry fruits. Smells good. Taste is soft, fruity, chocolatey sweet. Some vine fruit tang. Has a wood ash dryness to it. Smooth mouthfeel. Finishes smoky, tangy sweet. Very decent, silky, smoked stout.

Bottle. Nose is caramel, brown sugar, hint of toffee, apples, hint of lime or citrus from the hops. Taste is brown sugar, leading to a burnt sugar and caramel, then a sticky apple and dark fruits note. There is a pleasing, piney hops note cutting through and preventing the beer being cloying, though there is a citrus note which errs on tangerine, which doesn’t sit quite right with me. This is a really nice barley wine. Bottle 2017: Has much more pronounced banana and vanilla notes in the fruit than the bottle tasted previously and the tangerine notes is much more balanced and there is a smokiness coming through. I still like it a lot. Bottle 2016 drunk Jan 2019: Beer is very, very cloudy which I don't seem to have noted previously. Nose has rich caramel, vanilla, the banana is very forward, brown sugar, toffee, it all comes together in a banoffee pie way. Taste is still very pine, tangerine, marmalade, slight smokiness, burnt sugar. As with my original review the very forward tangerine is not as likable as the the 2017 bottle to my taste. Mouthfeel is very smooth. I am surprised how much of the hop character has remained.

4.0 cask at beer nouveau... Golden amber... Thin white lacing.... Soft floral fruit... Juicy orange.. Light floral fruit

Never had a barley before, so no ref point, but this is a damn tasty beer. Big sweet maltiness, but nicely balanced. Like it a lot!
