Description
Sam and Maudeline Black are a husband and wife team who started their brewing company Blacks Brewery in 2013. This venture/obsession first began many years ago when Maudeline gave Sam a beer making kit for Valentines Day. What started as a hobby quickly developed into an obsession and thus through Sam’s passion and enthusiasm Blacks Brewery became reality. Living the dream since 2013! In 2015 the Distillery was added. We are Ireland's first co-located micro brewery and Distillery.

500mL bottle at home. Pours an amber gold, medium off white head, some lacing on the glass, head dissipates quickly. Aroma of pine and citrus, so so aroma, seams a little muted for some reason. Full oily mouthfeel, very bitter, went way too far with the bittering hops and not far enough on the aroma hops. Nice malt backbone on this, finish is bitter and long. Overall this is ok but too much pain without the pleasure.

Bottle from Martins. Jet black with a solid tan head. Aroma is mocha malt. Flavour starts quite watery, but really kicks off in the mouth, chocolate malt, smooth dark fruit, plums, chocolate. Long lingering creamy textured finish.

Bottle at the Cotteridge Convention thanks to Steve. It pours hazy amber with a small, bubbly white head. The nose is sweet, juicy, orange, tangerine, stewed fruits and toasty brown bread. The taste is crisp, bitter-sweet, toasty, orange peel, peppery citrus peel, pithy lemon, bready and some booze towards the finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Pretty punchy stuff. Perhaps a touch past its prime, but decent anyhow.

24th Jan 2015: bottle shared at the Cotteridge Wine meet another one from Steve. Misty orange/amber with a good off white head. Nose was light, earthy hops with some sweet maltiness and mixed fruits. The taste came across as semi-sweet molasses with mild citrus fruit flavours which complimented each other nicely. Expected a more balanced or hoppier brew to be honest, but I really enjoyed the beer I got, and that is what counts!

Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, big thanks to Kenwold, 28/11/14. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a decent tan covering. Nose is charr, hint coffee, spice, earthy hops, toffee. Taste comprises light pine, dusty hops, light roast, faint berry. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with earthy hop bitterness. Ticks the style boxes, OK CDA, nothing to revisit for me mind.

Bottle split at the Cotteridge Convention, thanks to Steve, BIK, 24/01/14. Hazed orange amber with a decent off white covering. Nose is earthy hop, caramel, candied fruit peel, bitter orange. Taste comprises candied orange peel, grapefruit, bubblegum, light dank hop strokes. Medium + body, fine carbonation, sweet licks in the close. Ok DIPA, ABV well masked, a touch sweet, hops not overly promiment, mellow affair. Veering towards a barley wine as it ages perhaps?
