Bottle. Nose is hazelnut, salt, some sour wheat, chocolate, touch of leather, tobacco. Taste is sour, salt, leading to leather, emerging chocolate, green apples, wheat, more salt. Second sip brings hints of tobacco and lemon rind. Mouthfeel is good. I am a big fan of interesting low strength refreshing beers. I am not sure the darker notes really fit this model well, but the beer has great depth for the strength. Ultimately I find it as disjointed as black IPAs so a little off putting.

Draught, Marble Arch Inn, Manchester. Pissy gold looks with a tiny white head. Vinegar, fruits and pepper in the nose. Some sourness in the flavour alongside notes of pineapple, spice, butterscotch and chilli pepper. Different and quite enjoyable.

Pale yellow colour, diminishing white head. Aroma of chili, saison yeast, bell peppers, vegetables. Light sour flavour, light malts, subdued chili heat - builds up initially, but never gets too spicy. Light spicy finish, malts, chili, saison funk. The pineapple didn’t leave much of an impression, but an amusing beer nonetheless.(from 50cL bottle @ RBESG 2014, London. Thanks for sharing, rb crew!)

Bottle: Nose is very fruity, yeast peach, mango, lemon, a lot of funk notes, very nice. Taste is odd a lot of smoke, leading to dry peppery tones a touch of citrus, dry, I guess a bit of lemon grass, but still mostly a dry smoke. Moutheel is water. Doesn’t really do it as a saison for me and the taste seems utterly independent of the nose. I am not really sure what to make of this, I certainly couldn’t recommend it.

Warm golden colour, white head. Funky aroma, light sweat, barnyard. Sour flavour, malts, lemon zest, saison yeast. Funky finish, malts, sour notes. Not so much a barley wine, more resembling a strong American style saison imho.

Cask @ Sparrow Bier Cafe, Bradford. Darker amber in colour with a creamy head. There’s some pale malts here, but its strength dominates the taste department with a dry malty aftertaste evident.
