On tap at the brewpub. Poured a clear orangish gold with a large white head that lasted throughout the beer and laced nicely. Aroma was full of light fruits with backing notes consisting of spice, light grain, light citrus and floral notes. Flavor was full of similar light fruits, particularly apple, with a relatively strong citrus note coming out in the finish. There were some backing notes of light grain and spice.

12 oz. bottle. Dark brown color, nearly opaque. Thin, white, creamy head. Great lacing and presentation. Malty aroma, with a faint nuttiness. A nice light, malt flavor up front...mouthfeel has a slight crispness. Noticeable hop presence quickly blends into the back. Finish again has a nice hop taste as it warms, with a slight nuttiness. Very well done brown ale.

Pours deep clear amber into a Sam glass. Off-white head recedes to hug rim. Sweet dark caramel aromas. Thin with sour chocolate and caramel upfront and a lightly hopped charcoal finish.

Bottle. Clear, deep amber body. Frothy off-white head. Hops in the aroma are muted because of the strength of the malts. otes of caramel, toasted grain, bread, grapefruit, citrus and a hint of pine and herbs. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. The finish is lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation.

Great amber coloured body with a thick tan head. and some bubbles rising from the bottom - nice. Aroma of strong almost-wet hops with pine, alcohol and grapefruit coming out most, with a good malt backbone and a nice bitter scent. Medium-bodied; Strong fresh hop flavour with a good herbal and floral flavour and a metallic kick at the end. Aftertaste shows some good malt background and a touch of spices and some light alcohol, but not as deep as expected. Overall, the hops really come out in the nose, but they are less apparent in the flavour and especially the finish. A nice beer for sure, but I could have had more bitterness - regardless, the fresh hops smell great and do well in this beer, I just wish they added more in the boil. Great to sample, given that i’m nowhere close to this brewery. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Colonial Spirits in Acton, Massachusetts on 23-September-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 07-October-2010.

12oz bottle scored via trade. I’ve had this beer many times, just never got down to rating. Pours a watery, opaque black with a thin, lacing tan head. Nose is sweet, nutty, malty, dark toast, whole grain bread, light brown sugar, wet oats, bread dough, cookie dough. Flavor is really nice, sweet, nutty, coffee with cream, malty, dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, German chocolate cookies. Finish is silky and dry. Superb. A classic.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 9/10/10
Aroma: The nose is earthy and malty with some citrusy hops in there as well
Appearance: It pours a hazy dark orange-brown color with a thick, creamy tan head
Flavor: The taste starts-off a bit bitter, and then turns bad quickly, aftertaste is rather poor
Palate: This one has a long lasting, rough feel on the mouth, acidic, dry, and almost medicinal feel
Overall Impression: The appearance gives off a really good impression, I was sure fooled. At first I was expecting a decent beer, but this was not one, and I'm an IPA fan. It is not even bitterness that derails this one, I like a well-made harsh-hop beer, this just isn't it. This one is harsh only really in a bad way. Did I get a bad bottle? I don't know. I'd try it again if only to see if there was something wrong with this bottle, but if it tasted like this again, it would probably be a drain pour.
2.2: 6/4/3/2/7
Updating this rating with a 22 oz bottle from my brother-in-law, 7/2/15. Thanks bud!
Look, this probably isn't a 2.2, but I'm not sure I had a bad bottle on my first rate either.
New score is: 2.7: 5/4/5/3/10

Pours clear gold with a white head. Earthy, malty aroma. No hops. Lightly sweet watermelon flavor. Thin bodied. No hop action going on here makes this one a disappointment.
