Description
Residents of Boston’s North Shore were first introduced to Ipswich Ale during the spring of 1991. With over 30 years of history behind it, Ipswich Ale has been in existence longer than nearly every other craft brewer in New England. Since that time, the Ipswich Ale portfolio of brands have developed into a tradition shared by not only the residents of eastern Massachusetts, but across New England.

Took over production for Newburyport Brewing in 2019, before both breweries were acquired by Huntwicke Capital Group later that year.

Began a partnership with RiverWalk Brewing in late 2023, moving the bulk of production to RiverWalk's facilities, while leaving a small pilot system in Ipswich for small batch and experimental brews.

Medium, dark-beige head over black beer with a reddish shine. Oatmeal clearly in the nose, with non-fermentable sugars as lactose, and milk chocolate, only slightly burnt notes. Cigarette ash, still quite some restsugars or non-fermentables in the main taste; ending burnt-bitterish. Very slick - oatmeal slick? - with a wry aftertaste, drying out. Nice stout, really. Thanks to Dirk & Leen for sharing, and to Eugene, of course.

Nice crisp clear amber coloured body with a thick white head. Aroma of fresh malt, strong hops, cardboard, metal and a hint of fresh fruit. Medium-bodied; Strong metallic twang and a bitter malt flavour up front with some hops and a bit of yeast in the finish. Aftertaste shows some body, alcohol and a definite effervescent taste. Overall, not a great beer - worth trying perhaps, but really, many beers are better worth your money! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle (as ’Hook & Ladder Golden Ale) purchased on 03-May-2008 from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington D.C., on 20-May-2008.

12 oz bottle...medium brown with a tan head that is weak...malts on the nose, and barely a hop...the light hoppines makes this a weak brew...just weak and easy to drink...flavors are thin malts and that inkling of hops, not for me

12 oz bottle...cloudy copper with a smattering of beige foam...aroma is malt based with a hint of hops...and I smell strawberries?...(maybe its from the earlier preserves)...a very weak IPA...sad, oh well it was only a 12 oz shared with 3 others...weak and watery, but drinkable still

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of kramer17801. Pours an opaque black with a small, light brown head. Aroma of vanilla and burned malts. Medium body with rather burned malt accents. Dry, burned, malty bitter finish. A solid and classic Stout. 250308

Bottled. A pitch black beer with an oily consistence in the glass and no head. The aroma is sweet and very roasted, but also with notes of hop soup. The flavor has strong notes of roasted malt and dark bitter chocolate as well as some hops, that tickles the tongue, leading to a dry roasted and bitter finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

From bottle, 9B Papsoes New Zealand vs US blind tasting. Pours black with a lacing tan head. Acidic and roasted malt aroma. Smooth chocolate flavour with a mild roasted note. Soft vanilla note in addition. Ends light chocolate flavoured and hard roasted. Good balance.

From cask. Pours hazy brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is toasted malty, breadish and chocolate. Bitter, roasted malty and light chocolate. Bitter and dry. Lingering chocolate malty finish.7-3-7-3-14

Dark brown color and almost no head to speak of. Uninteresting and standard aroma. Malty taste... a few weird elements in there that are left to ambiguity. Drinkable, but not really that good of a beer.

Dark ruby brown color... more than the average brown ale. Thick foamy off-white head. Leaves lacing. Couldn’t put finger on the aroma exactly, but it was good (everybody on this review board seems to disagree exactly what it was anyway). Bitter front to the taste, with a lot of roasted malts and a fair amount of hops. Well-balanced and very tasty.

Doesn’t look too shabby. Cloudy orange color with a pretty light, but nice looking head, which lasts for enough time I suppose. Smells like piny hops says I. Not very complex. Mostly hops straight to the face. Some citrus in there as well. Not too bad, but nothing really special.
