Poured a deep, oily black with a creamy, lacing eggshell colored head. Looks appetizing. Nose is all malt, heavy roasted malt aroma with a hint of candy. Smells simple but inviting and mouth watering. Flavor is all roasted malt and nuts, heavy coffee finish with a velvet and chocolate texture. Very solid, but a little too simple.

Hops hops hops, all day long, hops hops hops while I sing this song... or drink this beer. So Rock Art finally made a beer that isn’t total crap. Well it may be total crap but one wouldn’t know because you can’t taste anything but a hop load of hops. I mean its cool enough with a strong aroma of bitter tangerine peel and fresh air leafiness. My 22oz bomber pours a light very muddy orange color with a small but strong head. Taste is bitter bitter hops of grapefruit. Basically, think of the peel of a yellow grapefruit and hats the taste. A medium-light body and a long bitter aftertaste. Rock Art bills this as an ESB cubed but this is really a DIPA.

Poured a orange amber with reddish hues and a slim, off white, lacing head. Smells very good, citrus, pine, candy, light fruits, slight perfume. Taste was very pleasant with more of the same with more malt, heavy citrus. Finish starts sweet which takes an edge off a lingering bitterness.

Deep brown coloured body with a small tan head. Aroma of fresh figs, malt, a bit of hops a tiny amount of alcohol and a lot of nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with some sugars and a little spiceyness...nothing more. Aftertaste is fairly bland, some cardboard, malt and a tiny bit of alcohol is noticeable. Overall, not a barley wine at all - more of a brown ale than anything else. Now I understand why this 65 cL bottle was only $4. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from K&E Discount Beverage in New Paltz, New York on 25-May-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Draught at EBF
The Rock Art guy got all flustered when I told him he stole the name from Ben and Jerrys. Add "lack of a sense of humor" to the problems at Rock Art.
Dark maple-brown beer, but yet quite clear with a small, quickly receding light-tan head that leaves little/no lacing.
Sweet caramel-toffee in the nose is quite sugary, but backed by a load of acidic, American hops lending quite a bit of pine and light floral character. It falls off by the finish, however, which resumes its malt sweetness, albeit more elegantly (probably not the right word) with notes of roast, cola and maple fudge. A strong note of buttercream and vanilla lingers on, quite thick and voloptuous and mixing with the layers of dark malts, it’s pretty enjoyable. Alcohol is held back for a while, but emerges on the finish after some warming.
Sweet, sticky and definitely chewy, the consistency was the most remarkable part about it. Almost like chocolate-vanilla fudge iced cream, between the base malts, chocolate malts and thick body. Some roast and tar make their way in, lightly, but a surprising lack of vinousness or any fruitiness here. Standard American over-bittering leads to rather dull acidity/bitterness, with a lack of hop flavor/character, mostly pine and citrus. Sweet toffee and maple fight through it on the finish, with light vanilla cream lingering as well. Moderately alcoholic, but the texture soaked some of it up.

2006 bomber drunk on 3/10/07
Very pale gold body has just a shade of light copper. White head atop it is medium-large in size, somewhat rocky and slowly fades to cover, leaving light lacing. Clear, filtered and quite bubbly.
Tomahawk hops (most hops actually) are extremely perishable and leave a dirty, catty smell and flavor when they arent fresh and crisp. Not to say that these were stale or anything, but there’s definitely a dirty, cat litter sort of nose going on. The cohumulone levels are low on these, so they dont overwhelm with bitterness and though they are still extremely high in alpha acids, it seems like they used these pretty well and added them more on the backside of the boil and via dry-hopping. They give off a very strong, slightly sweet lemon-tangerine aroma, with a bit of peachiness that tends slightly tropical. I wouldnt say this is exactly bursting with aroma, however, as the lemon is rather subtle and there’s a dry, somewhat dull paperiness, not to mention the slight dirtiness. Malt is very pale considering theyre calling this an esb. Mostly honey and creaminess, with only light touches of very light caramel malt. It matches the hops well, though. Anything else would destroy the delicateness of this variety, I think. Alcohol is mostly concealed in the nose.
Lemon and more sweet fruitiness in the flavor is dried out by a rather bland, biscuity/crackery sort of note. Only towards the finish does some light caramel and honey add some sweetness back to it. All the while, moderate dextrines give a surprisingly full texture, despite the fact that the beer is obviously quite filtered and force carbed. Dirtiness from the hops persists and it tastes a lot like my bad homebrews and others that I’ve had. Lemony flavor, with light herbal notes get rather boring towards the end. A moderate amount of hop acids don’t seem to have anywhere to go, either, and build up on the palate. Moderate alcohol apparency upon warming.

Dark black body with a very small light brown head that quickly fully diminishes. Coffee and dark roasted malt aroma. Sweet coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and some molassas in the flavor with a dry bitter end.

Poured a watery looking maple brown from the bomber with almost no off white head. Malty aroma but also quite grainy, like a loaf of fresh baked bread. Very grainy and malt flavor, which I enjoyed alot. Sweet and maybe slightly bitter. Finish brings the roasted malt which is also sugary and sweet. This beer is easy to drink and can please a crowd. Might not be complex enough for the educated drinker.

A hazy amber beer with a thin lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with quite a lot of hops. The flavor is sweet with a dry malty note combined with a light fruity note and a light oxidation. I’m surprised that it is not better.

Pours a light gold with a generous white head. Light malt accompanied by some lightly perfumed hops. Fruity. Slightly sweet with some underlying bitterness as it moves towards the finish. A bit of cardboard. Needs more malt and hop complexity with just a touch more body.
