Draft at The Bistro’s IPA Fest; Nose of lemon hops and some caramel; cloudy amber with a small off-white head; flavor of hop bitterness with a light caramel note.

2006 Vintage. Toasted French oak.
Gorgeous amber-red colour. Sugary-vanilla overtones on the nose, under which a rich caramelly and subtlely fruit barley wine lies. Snappy taste - incredibly rich malts in the earthy-toffeeish vein meld very well with masculine oaky notes, hints of vanilla and even hints of bacterial tartness. This is what I want in a BA brew - a gorgeous accent rather than an overwhelming dominance of barrel, something that adds to the existing beer and takes it to new levels rather than crushing the poor palate into submission.

Cloudy dark amber/light brown colour with a bare minimum of head. Big, oaky nose with toffeeish elements underneath, late toast and alcohol. Flavourwise, this is light, toasty, oaky with a toffeeish accent and a hint of late alcohol. The oak is an interesting accent but ultimately its neither here nor there.

Hazy golden-amber. Thin but rich head. Very grassy aroma with pungent sage-like undertones and plenty of baguette-like malts. Quite crisp and hoppy, with a big crusty malt kiss, leading into a long, herbal hop finish. Assertive, rustic, quenching pils for summer, more or less in the Bavarian interpretation.

Slightly hazy dull red colour. Peachy-fruitiness leads the nose with light caramel after that. Bloody good fresh melon/citrus taste. I swear it’s pulpy! More refreshing than any 10% I’ve ever had - if they hadn’t served me in a goblet I’d be inclined to think the guy was lying to me. Moderate body, and a fructose sweetness. More refreshing and tasty than brews half its weight...killer.

Draught pint at Redbones on 11/15/06
Peachy-marigold tinged blonde beer, with some stronger amber and copper tints through the middle. Medium to medium-high clarity, obviously low filtration. White head is one-finger high, showing moderate retention, light lacing.
Heavily aspirinated aroma is sour and backed by heavily bitter hops. White grapefruit, lemon peel, sourdough bread, sweat and crushed aspirin make short work of the light honeyish malts. Not a very strong aroma, with the yeast adding a bland note. All citrus, light resin, not too encouraging...
Heavily sour/bitter twang in the mouth, with alpha acids running rampant, an aspirin and dough flavor of unmitigated yeast. Almost no malt backing and very little attempt at flavor hops. Absolutely unbalanced, fatiguing and crass. Perhaps some toasted malt notes, but no doubt they are just another aspect of the dryness and sour flavors. Would not have guessed amarillo, those don’t seem well-done here at all. Moderate carbonation, slightly aggressive at times. Yikes.

Orange-red murky body, thin buff head. Otherwise caramely aroma flawed by buttery diacetyl notes. Some sourish wet socks characteristics. Thin caramely body with musty fermented fruits (pear) and light earthy, leafy hops. Significantly flawed.

Rating #1500. Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Hazy orange body, thin off-white head. Earthy, estery nose with notes of grassy hops, biscuit, and breads. Fresh, crisp body with earthy, bitter hops, toast, and caramel, the latter providing light sweetness that cuts the herbal, soapy body. Good complexity.
