Can: Poured a light amber color ale with a good size foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma consists of lightly sweet caramel malt with not many other discernable characteristics. Taste is dominated by some lightly sweet caramel malt. Medium body with some OK carbonation. No hint of peat smoke or fruity ester. Not bad with no identifiable brewing flaws and easily quaffable.

Very dark brown. Slightly chewy, soft toffee aroma with light diacetyl. Heavy toasty palate. Light toffee and some late sweetness. Decent brew, not totally cohesive but fills the belly with goodness.

Light amber color, very fizzy, medium head. Sweet, caramel aroma, similar to their Scottish PA, with toffee, cherries, butterscotch. Buttery, caramel flavor. Sweet but not too much so. Slightly creamy, with a bit of hops. Finish dries out a bit, with more hops and even a touch of citrus in over the malt. Light to medium body, slightly high carbonation. An interesting lager, similar to a Vienna, with a malt signature like their PA. It is sweet and full-flavored but very well balanced. Not fabulous, but good drinking and interesting.

Ratings based on the can. Dark brown with some red. Thin, lacy head. Sweet, spicy, caramel and molasses aroma. Sweet, carmel flavor, spicy, with rich, complex malts. Sweetness lasts to the end, but the finish is dryer, with a touch of alcohol and hops; enough so that it is not cloying. This is a great English Mild: truly mild but not weak. Great flavor.

On tap at Volo, and again at the Toronto Beer Fest. This is a nice looking, nice bodied, complex and well-balanced porter. Lots of cacao and dark fruits, with a great balance between sweet / fruity and burnt / bitter. Very creamy to boot, and port-like, which I guess comes from the Beaujolais barrels. The wine flavor is definitely there, but subtle and unobtrusive. I really enjoyed this complex brew.

I am rating the Neustadt Double Fuggled Ale, served from the cask at C’est What? in Toronto. I must add that this is definitely NOT the same beer as the Scottish Ale. The base might be the same or similar, but the hopping and the overall effect are entirely different. This is a fantastic beer, with a perfect balance between sweet caramel malt, in the Scottish style, and a decent amount of fuggles hops. The great thing is its originality--when have you had such a dose of fuggles straight? Never before for me. This is a beer unlike any I have ever had--not the most challenging, but perfectly balanced and extremely interesting. A must try, and I wish you guys would give it its own page!!!
