Description
Oxbow is a small farmhouse brewery located in rural Newcastle, Maine. The brewery is nestled in an enchanted forest amongst rolling farmlands and winding tidal rivers, of which the ebb and flow provide a constant reminder that the coast is near.
The name Oxbow is inspired by the bends in these rivers, the Dyer in particular, which features stunning horseshoe-shaped oxbows where the river covers tremendous ground to travel what could otherwise be a very short linear distance. We employ a similar approach when crafting our beers, taking months or years to create a beverage that is commonly produced in a matter of days.

Sampled from the tap at As Is. pours a clear yellow gold with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma is funky with light grains and a growing tart rhubarb note. Flavor has tart rhubarb throughout with a light funk and abit of sweet grains backing.

Pours slightly hazed gold into a pils. Bright white micro head with good retention recedes leaving sheet lacing. Hay and biscuit aromas. Crisp with apricot and peach upfront turning to melon and orange smarties in the medium length finish.

Canned 1/22/25, drunk 3/26/25.
Clear amber-honey. Medium-sized, off-white head quickly fizzles to thin bubbles on edge.
Light clove accenting rich grains, round yellow fruits, a bit of apple and various peppery phenols. Maybe a bit of floral and citrus accent, but it's light, allowing the yeast to shine.
Round and nutty with chewy grains and a very tasteful adjunct addition that doesn't overwhelm the yeast. Earthy and lightly tart. Not my favorite yeast expression, or maybe the rosehip and hibiscus are skewing my perception, as it seems very phenolic and lightly clove-y. But I think the earthiness is well-done, as well as the soft, supple texture and good attenuation. The carbonation is very low and slightly loose, however, which is odd given the can conditioning.

Pour is a murky amber with a small tan head. Aroma is an oily English brown ale malt with some funky yeast. Flavor is a smooth and silky malt with notes of chocolate and cherries. Finish has some funk with an ever so slight tartness. This was different and pretty good.

Tap at The Owl Farm. Deeper copper pour with an off-white head. Somewhat smoky and quite malty, sweet, with a touch of maple that further enhances the sweetness, but without overdoing it. Medium to full bodied with a soft carbonation. Tasty.

Nonic pint draft at Scales in Portland, Maine. The pour is amber and pretty much no head (served very full). The aroma is malty apple fruit, sweet and floral. The taste is bright floral, caramel malt and a soft toast. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and softly sweet, floral drying finish. Easy drinking beer, great with the oysters at Scales.
