Patrick picked up homebrewing as a hobby, later to become an obsession, as a distraction to the banality of law school. Soon he was winning numerous awards for his beers and driving his wife, Rachel, mad with the messes that he would leave on the kitchen stove. Upon finishing school, he took it upon himself to draw up a business plan rather than study for the California Bar exam – a risky endeavor that shows through still today in the creative, genre-tilting beers that The Bruery prides itself on.
The Bruery is founded on the excitement that Patrick felt in those first years of homebrewing and we continue to strive for that same passion in every aspect of our business today. We never stop challenging ourselves to develop distinctive & imaginative beers, constantly pursuing improvement in all that we do. We brew dozens of original beers each year with our list of ingredients and inspirations growing perpetually. Our collection of oak barrels has also become a primary element of our brewery. Nearly half of our beer is aged in wine or spirit barrels bringing forth flavors reminiscent of the Belgian countryside or classic American distillers.

Capped 750 from South Bay Drug. Pours a rather dark reddish copper with a four finger foamy tan head. Lots of spicey darkish malt aroma. Notes of Xmas spices. Medium plus body with lots of frothy carbonation. Flavor is cinnamon/dark malt/wood. Maybe rye is just spicey. Finishes well balanced. A little fruit comes out in the end. Pretty tasty.

750 - pours a dark ruby, with a foamy, thick tan head - initial aroma is of loads of dry cocoa, followed by prunes, raisin, fig, dark bread, tannins/dark fruit skins - huge carbonation, full in the mouth - fairly sweet up front, with strong chocolate flavors, caramel, toffee - the pecans come through in the middle, but only a tiny bit - starts drying out about as much as a 12% beer can after that - some tannic character, and a warming, spicy character that tastes only slightly like it is from alcohol - fairly yeasty throughout, reminding me a bit of a Unibroue beer - a lot of roasted nut character in the finish - an improvement over the PiaPT for sure, but their lower ABV stuff is still much better.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Gilly's, 11/12/09
Aroma: The nose has roasted characteristics, some chocolate and floral notes, and some wheat as well
Appearance: Pours a reddish-brown color with a huge fluffy tan head that dissipates quickly
Flavor: Taste is quite wheat-like, with some spice and smoke notes as well, medium-sweet malty flavor
Palate: It is fairly light (certainly lighter then I was expecting), with an alright, somewhat tingy mouthfeel
Overall Impression: It isn't particularly exciting. I also noticed that the nose fades rather quickly (I probably would have gone 7 originally, but was hard pressed to go over 5 by the end - so I compromised on 6). The rest of the beer kind of felt the same way. It's an alright brew, but it does very little to blow me away, and doesn't really evolve at all as it warms. That pretty much covers this one.

This beer is a cloudy orange-brown color with a medium frothy light beige head that burns away quickly. Partial rings of lacing. The aroma has a variety of spices like nutmeg and allspice over the relatively subtle maple. Medium body with flavors of brown sugar, maple, cinnamon and a touch of yeast. The finish is spices and molasses and a light maple aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a large tan head and a deep brown body. Aroma is earthy with nutshells, toffee, chocolate, coffee, cocoa, alcohol and some oatmeal. Taste is fudge, pecan and dried cocoa powder. Nice and festive. Medium to light carbonation, full bodied, and very well hidden alcohol. I look forward to drinking a lot more of this!

750 ml bottle shared by iowaherkeye. Nose of pumpernickle bread, a light smoky note, oaky vanilla, and and light sweetness. Clear brown with a big beige, glass lacing head. Flavor is rye, very light sweetness, smoke, and bitterness. Smells better than it tastes
