Description
Since 1975, Boon Brewery has been owned and run by Frank Boon, one of the pioneers of the authentic lambic and gueuze revival. But the first signs of the brewery date back to 1680, as a farm-brewery and distillery in the village of Lembeek. In 1860 Louis Paul bought the brewery to brew only lambic and faro. From 1875, he began bottling gueuze lambic. In 1898, Pierre Troch bought the brewery. But after the economic crisis of 1927, it came into the hands of Joseph De Vits. His son, Rene is renowned for the production of soft and fine gueuze lambic. As Rene De Vits had no children, he sold the brewery to Frank Boon.

Bottle. Musty malt and light grapefruit aroma. Cloudy dark amber color with giant, quick collapsing head. Moderately dry, tart musty grapefruit flavor with light slightest hint of sweetness at the end. Long lasting tart aftertaste. This beer is a work of art - exquisitely blended. Has the typical gueuze tart, musty flavor without being overwhelming. Many gueuzes are hard on my stomach and I can only take so much but this one is much easier to drink without being sweet.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm 28 Apr) Colour is red, I’d probably call it raspberry red, hazy. Nose is, well, kind of strange (after reading sayravais’s notes, with a recognizing smile, I must agree he has a point, but I din’t find it all that bad). Slight notes of rotten eggs and fresh manure are evident (one of my friends thought it was more like what you find in used diapers, while another didn’t find anything suspicious at all), but, however, with an underlying acidic and harsh raspberry character, like mashed, unsweetened raspberries. Taste is (a lot better than the smell) acidic and harsh with the same character of mashed, unsweetened raspberries. Very dry finish. Nice balance (in the taste that is). Tried it in 2005 as well, but that was absolutely brilliant, a completely different brew. So I would probably have to rerate this sometime.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. 5,3% abv) Colour is deep red, like a claret, with foamy head. Nose is slightly acidic and soapy with a nice cherry character. Taste is slightly acidic, with dark cherries and an nutty character from the stones. Full cherry taste. This is actually brilliant.

Brown, low blanket head. Aroma has Molassis, horseblanket, and a citric fruityness. Sets in with minerally dustyness, unpleasant chemical notes and horseblanket, a sugary sweet caramel note follows all the way through. Falls a bit flat after that - strangely unharmonic. Sparkly mouthfeel. Nutty finish.
