This is the first beer in our June 11th Old Ale Blind Tasting. It finished in a respectable 3rd place. Courtesy of fishingnet.

It pours brown with nice tan head. It has a pretty big aroma of dates minced in caramel. It seems pretty complex with some notes tough to discern. I get toffee, sweet dark grapes and fudge mixed with dark clay like mud. The taste seems thin to start things off. I get dates and grape jelly to go along with an earthiness and mild malt to caramel sweetness way in the back. I get just a hint of hop bitterness in the finish. Really dark fruity tasting beer.

Pours clear amber with tan head. The aroma is a perfumy combination of caramel candy, wood, malty sweetness and dark fruity esters. The taste begins smooth and malty then builds toward sweet dark fruity grape, cherry and plum ester notes. As the finish approaches wood and caramel notes surface and carry on into the after taste.

Cask at The Penny Black JDW Bicester, Oxon, 23-03-08 Mid amber in colour, unusual aroma bit chloriney, smooth caramel and bit fruity not really my thing I’m afraid.

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Amber clear colour with disappearing beige head. Lots of candy sugar on aroma with some faint hop. Bit of yeast. It’s a dullish bitter in the mouth with poor pasteurised flavours. Some yeast flavour. Very faint hop presence on end. Bit of toast.

Cask-conditioned at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol 18/3/08. I tired to approach this one with an open mind...honest. Amber coloured with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of sickly caramel and oily hops. The flavour was cloyingly sweet with a whiff of sulphur and a slightly metallic finish. Served in decent condition, so no excuses - poor!

Bottle 0,75l bought at Tesco Kensington Feb. 08. Golden colored. A large creamy head settling in a couple of minutes - but never died. Strong sweet hoppy aroma. Soft mouthfeel. Subtle flavor of sweet fruits. Dry fruity aftertaste with some bitterness. KI=6

Big offwhite head does not last, but clings well. Amber body. Light, malty nutty aroma. Deep malty nutty metallic harmonic taste with wooden caramelly notes and subdued fruitiness. Somewhat sweetish. Mid-bodied. Dry, almost tart, aftertaste. Good session beer. (0.5l bottle from Sainsbury’s, London.)
