Rerate. My previous notes I argued for this as a weizenbock. I'm still not sure what to call it, other than that Belgian Strong Ale is generically sufficient. In any case, this is a wonderful and lively, entertaining fun beer. Maybe not the most attractive, but still appropriate appearance, a heavily cloudy milky-gold, with a firm meringue of white foam. Aroma is quite lively and curious - even lambic like. There's a possible but unlikely hint of brett., some cherry, some wheaty malt, and raspberry notes. Surprisingly the flavor bears little resemblence to the nose, with a moderately tart, lightly sweet body leading to a balanced mildly fruity finish. Sufficient carbonation prevents any hint at cloying. Outstanding, fun.

I'm really not enthused with this one. I find it too thin and spritzy, with not nearly enough spice, malt, or hop character.

An interesting beer style, and Raftman provides a good example. Beer is cloudy and brown, with a weak whiskey aroma. It tastes alot like whiskey, albeit without the high alcohol burn - and since I'm not much of a whiskey drinker, this is better for me. A curious beer.

Unibroue version: Hazy amber colour. Subtle spiciness with a hint of malt in the aroma. Flavour is a lot more forceful, with dry yeast, hints of spice, peppery notes and breadcrusty malts. A touch spritzy, but finish with fairly robust bread notes.

Original: A hazy amber Belgian-style ale with a nose of apple and berry, and complex, yeasty, malty character. 7 3 8 3 13

Three year old sample: Hazy yellow colour. Aroma is yeasty, with apples, sweet gale, oregano and peach. Sweet, flowery, herbal body. Young, this beer was so yeasty as to be a cross between a witbier and an abbey dubbel. Now, the yeast has dropped out and the herbs are really showing themselves. It has emerged into the historical re-creation it was always intended to be. I like it much more at this age. Too bad there are hardly any bottles left (I have but one). (rating when young: 2.7)

Crisp, dryish Vienna-style. Like with U, there is nothing wrong with the beer per se, but it isn't worthy of Unibroue.

If you forget that Unibroue makes this, you will enjoy it a lot more. It's not that bad, but it's a waste of their talents.
