Description
At Brains we are proud to be Welsh & proud that we remain family owned.

Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Cask poured into my third-pint glass. Nitro white head leaving spotty lace behind. Very nice, deep brown head. Lighter aroma of spiced malts. Nuts and caramel in flavour underscored by a hoppy jam-like touch finishing off with malt-bitterness. Different and quite nice. GBBF, Earls Court, London 02.08.2011.

Third-pint, cask, handpulled at B1 Seacole Brewery Bar, GBBF 2011. Dotted spots on the glass from a creamy, white head. Amber-gold body. Modest smell of grassy hops. Mild and watered malt-fruity taste. Faint bitter end. Too easy to drink, perhaps (London, 02.08.2011).

500ml Bottle (As Brains Original Stout) - Dark brown, almost black, with red tinges and a tan head. Malty, roasted and chocolatey aroma. The taste is smooth, roasted and chocolatey. Quite dry and roasted in the finish.

50cl bottle of Brains Original Stout from Tescos, Hastings. A deep chestnut black colour with a loose creamy beige head; rich coffee and chocolate aroma; the texture is milky, but the taste is quite strongly bitter and lacking the expected sweetness; there’s some chocolate then a long dry finish with burnt demerara sugar and a slight warming at the end. A fine stout.

Bottle from Tesco
Appearance - Black, ruby edges, large rocky tan head, good lacing.
Aroma - Roasted malt, bit of chocolate.
Taste - Roasted malt, chocolate, bitter hops, charcoal, burnt wood, hint of dust.
Palate - Light body and texture, soft carb. Very dry finish, roast bitter, earthy, rough, bit metallic. Not pleasant.
Overall - Flavoursome for 4.1% but has offputting charcoal notes and the finish is harsh which spoils the beer. Not keen on this one - last 1/4 of bottle drain pour.

Cask at GBBF 2011, 3rd day. Deep amber with a fine head. Winy, fruity, caramel aroma—actually more like toffee. Rich as hell. Sweet, slightly funky, burnt brown sugar flavor. Caramel, minerals, fruit. Soft and silky. rather too sweet.
