Cask at the Rake. It pours dirty golden-amber with a medium white head. The nose is apricot, peach, yoghurt, nectarine, juicy pine and resin. The taste is soft, peachy, apricot, mango, good deal of bitterness, pine, resin, some alcohol, hay and earth with a dry, damn bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Would liked to have tried this sucker on keg to lift the palate a bit, but its rather tasty nonetheless.

Cask at the Rake. It pours clear gold with a small, bubbly white head. The nose is pretty pungent ....hay, grass, creamy orange, tangerine, white grape and juicy grapefruit. The taste is bitter, resinous, grapefruit rind, orange peel, hay, raw bitterness and wood with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and somewhat oily mouth-feel. Assertive bitterness to it. A enjoyable cask APA.

28th February 2014
Rake. Cask. 5.6%. Very light haze on this amber beer. No real head. Palate is smooth and semi dry with modest fine carbonation. Mild toffee and a touch of apple. Little dried fruits. Mellow whisky. Slight smoky streak. Smooth dry finish. Flavours are well integrated and overall it’s fruity and pretty drinkable.

Cask at Merton Beer Festival 28th February & 1st March 2014 Hats off to Gazza for doing this, I believe that there were only twelve casks of this made. However I have to say from the start off that Islay whisky doesn’t really do a great deal for me, in fact I am not a whisky fan, full stop. So I am unlikey to like this (sorry Gazza!) to be truthful I got this as I knew it would be of interest to others. Pours brown in colour, flat with hardly a bubble. Aroma is very much a peaty whisky nose, I get that touch of germolene that I tend to find in Islay whisky cask aged beers. Taste is much the same with the Islay whisky cask dominating this with sweet malts also showing. Some people loved this in fact a chap called Shane a regular at Merton must have had 5 pints, sadly it didn’t do too much for me. Interestingly I really liked the standard version giving it a 3.8 clearly the whisky cask ageing did little for me other than to bring down an otherwise very good beer. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Tap at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Just about black. Bubbly, thick, lasting, tan coloured head. Coffee beans. High cocoa content chocolate. Some dried fruit, too. Taste is roast bitterness. A hint of sweetness, in a dark chocolate fashion, underlies. Bit of chew on the palate. Big, dry, roasty finish. Quality. (Looks like I got it in good nick?).

Cask at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Clear, golden colour. Thin, tight, sticky, white head. Good looking beer. Sweet malt. Lemon meringue? Or is it cheesecake? Anyway... Taste is fruity, with a light bitterness. Short, light, bitter finish. Easy drinking.

Cask handpull at The Craft Clerkenwell. Black beer with lits of dark bitter chocolate. Not much condition. Big black chocolate. Bitterness on the finish comes from the chocolate. Huge flavour. Could do with better condition.

Cask handpull at The Craft Clerkenwell. Clear pale gold lasting white head. Citra tangerine aroma. A little thin on the malt but enough to carry the beer. Then a huge smack of bitterness on the finish. Lovely beer. I mean huge citrus and hop. Could do with a bit more condition but the flavours are arresting. Wow.
