Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

Handpull cask at Derby Tup, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield for £2.50 a bloody pint. Deep red, clear with a gorgeous beige head heaving lots of lacing. Malty aroma, soft and resinous with perhaps a hint of blackberry. Sweet taste followed by a fuller bitterness spreading to the back of the throat in the long finish. Full body with soft carbonation. Incredible for the style.

Bottle. Nose is fruity hints of coffee blackcurrant shades of chocolate and licorice. Taste is much more bitter than the nose implies, dark chocolate, soy, almost meaty, slightly salty, licorice with coffee in the background. Slick Mouthfeel. Very good

Marvellous trad bitter. Slightly hazy amber with a frothy white head and a malty, floral aroma. Full of malt and fruit with floral, leafy bitterness finishing it all off

Cask at Petersgate Tap, Stockport. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. There’s a heady aroma of honey and figs with some floral hops mixed in for good measure. In the mouth the strongest sensation is of cloying honey sweetness, with plenty of dates, malts and bananas too. Later on the alcoholic strength makes itself evident leading to a boozy and slightly dry finish. This is rather nice – and dangerously drinkable !
