Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

Cask at Petersgate Tap, Stockport. Pours almost black with a medium sized foamy head and good lacing. There’s honey and roast malts in the aroma. Pretty much the same combination in the mouth plus hints of liquorice. Later on quite a mix of traces come through – dandelion & butdock, cola, ginger and vanilla. Finish is creamy and slightly sweet. This is very pleasant indeed.

Gravity cask at the Royston, Broadstairs, 24/11/23. Clear golden with an off white cap that thins to a swirl. Nose is orange zest, grass, melon, citric tinged straw. Taste comprises airy malts, tangerine, grains, light breads, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light drying close splashed with mellow hop bitterness. Passable pale ... rather stuck in 3rd gear.
