I have become quite fond of this one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a cloudy red-brown color with a very small tan head. The aroma is malty and has elements of molasses and ripened fruit. The flavor is malty and dominated by molasses and caramel notes. There is some ripened fruit in the undertones. There is some alcohol burn, but not nearly as much as you would expect given the alcohol content. A subtle note of bakers chocolate comes in as it warms. Lovely

Bottle Pours a hazy honey color with only a slight head that quickly reduses to a thin white ring. Lacing is sparse but fine and even. Aroma is standard pilsner, light grain, and slightly sweet. A bit-o-honey hint as well. Flavor is very light, but slightly tart and a little hoppy. Carbonation is moderate to soft and the fel is light and a bit thin. Aftertaste is a cardboard and honey flavor. Not bad for a typically uninteresting genre.

2004 draught. Appears a drab brown with some dark yellow-amber tinges in it and a decent white head. Aroma has light toffee, nuts and some mildly spicy hops. Flavor is pretty hoppy and spicy, without much dryness. But that’s quite alright, as the sweet brown malts complement the hops well. Maybe a hint of vinousness, or at least some light fruit esters in there. Mouthfeel was excellent; lightly creamy, not overcarbonated and had a strong medium body.

Bottle.Rating #400! So, Papa Grigori, we meet at last. A seductive deep roast flavor rises from that first sip. I detect a not unexpected raisiny note to you, and then something that whispers in my ear, "cherries." For something in such a tiny bottle, your taste is big and strong, deep and dark, deep and dark. Am I aware of your stoutish bitterness, that cuts through the smoothness of your malts. Yes, I am, Papa Perhaps it is from the time the Romanov partisans tried to drown you in the Neva.
So I made my fourth hundred reviews in a little over 4 months. That trip to Russia sure help me find new cheap beers. Still, pretty good for a homebrewer with cases of his own stuff to drink.

Bottled. Clear orange. Sweet and caramelly. A light dose of hops. Some crystal malt and toffee, but not much else. Not an attention grabber.

Pours a nice dark black with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate and hoppy. Flavor is milky, chocolatly and molasses. Everything has a very roasted flavor that warms as it goes down. Alcohol is felt as a spicy bite on the tounge. Good beer for sipping with a nice cigar.

Bottled, 2003 edition. What can I add to these raves? It’s just some kind of mad beer. Pours a "bright" brown that doesn’t make you think of barley wine just yet. Nice tan head on top. Mouthfeel is sticky, even for a barleywine, and rough like a buckwheat honey. This is full of rough edges, yet I wanted to savor every one of them. Couldn’t figure the malt presence, but toward the end of the sample, my upper lip was curled slightly inward.

A clear amber beer with a small head. The aroma contains lots of aroma hops. The flavor is sweet hoppy with notes of caramel and a dry end. But the body is thin.
