Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottle. An unclear, dark golden beer topped by a big, dense, beige head. The aroma is fruity and sugary, with alcohol warmth, some dried fruits and a grassy, malty touch. It’s warming and full-bodied with a nice carbonation level. It’s sweet and malty on the palate, with caramel malts and a touch of dried fruits. Not much of a Quad, but it’s drinkable anyway. Boring. 150724

Bottle. Lightly hazy in the glass, dark golden in color and with a big, dense, white head. Lacings. The aroma is fruity and piney, with some sweetish malts in the back. Some cellar notes in the flavor, with fruityness and some pine cones. Decent bitterness too, and a herbal note. Full body and nice carbonation, semi-dry on the palate. Long cellary, piney and fruity finish with a fine bitterness. Decent this one, nothing more. 150724

Bottle. A hazy, pale golden beer with big, dense, white head. Fruity, lightly spiced aroma with some grains and a faint yeasty, piney touch. It’s quite bitter on the palate, with peppery, resiny notes and a good fruityness. Dry on the palate, medium bodied and nicely bitter, with a fine carbonation level. Lasting finish with fruits, some pale malts, resins and bitterness. Easy drinkable, refreshing and a bit boring. 150724

330ml bottle. Clear, deep golden colour with average to huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Floral hoppy and floral yeasty aroma, sweet-ish pale malty background, fruity hints of peach and apricot. Taste is slightly sweet pale malty, hints of honey, mild floral hoppy and floral yeasty overtones; smooth, soft palate gentle carbonation. Mellow, mild and cautious.

A really lovely clear orange golden color with a fine white head. Caramel malty, some yeast and citric aroma. Medium + body and a fine carbonation. Ok balance between sweetness and bitterness. Citric, some yeast, mild fruity and caramel malty flavor. Unusual but quite nice and refreshing IPA.

Bottle shared thanks to Deanso, as Islay edition, aliased to this. Pours cloudy brown with a thick off white head. Aroma of massive peat, caramel, toffee, sweet malts, some light overripe dark fruit but mostly overwhelmed by the peat. Flavour is over moderate sweet and light moderate bitter. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation.
