A black beer with a beutiful brown head. The aroma is powerful of chocolate with notes of alcohol and sweet malt. The flavor is roasted with strong notes of chocolate, but also notes of malt and coffee on a slightly acidic background. A really good beer.

2004 bottle (pretty sure). Great pour. Transluscent, bottle conditioned, rusty orange, golden-peach. Great head that does not leave, small and white. Decent lacing and fine bubbles and yeast. Aroma is wonderful. Exceedingly clean and strong of yeast, yellow apples, candied sugar, light sweet vinegar, ripe white grape skins. Wow, what an aroma. Flavor is quite good as well, though the finish is a bit watery and stale. Starts out with lots of alcohol, and a big flavor which is very reminescent of peaches soaked in cointreau. Moderately acidic, estery, and has a good dose of alcohol. For being my favorite style of trippel (estery, alcoholic, low sweetness) this certainly goes over well with me. Head is initially quite large, but rapidly diminishes to cover. Is this still bottle conditioned? Hard to tell. Seems very clear, and this bottle had rested for some time. Light/pale gold with a hint of dry grass and bronze tints (yellow-green). Very hoppy nose and flavor, actually seems to mask a good deal of the beer. Not syrupy or too sweet, but actually, rather lean and filtered tasting. Loose carbonation and a fair amount of astringency on the end. Light alcohol warmth, tons of dry phenols and very, very dry nectarine skin esters. Banana and buttery honey notes seem rather unrefined. Love the hop flavor, but that’s about all it seems to have going for it now. Score is for the current bottle.

2003 bottle. Pours well enough a nice dark ruby tinged thick syrupy brownish black. Tan head and nice coffee, chocolate and raspberry aroma, some anise in there as well. Very dry and thick. Flavor however, I just dont get along with. Must be the brewery. Tastes like they are using cocoa powder. Very powdery, exceedingly dry, no sweet caramel malt. Huge heavy black malt apparency and dominance. I will say, the raspberries are not overdone and that’s great, but I just dont think it has the right balance of sweetness in the malting. Hops are present but not overpowering. Dry and lightly acidic. Body is medium full, a bit too much carbonation.

One of my least favorite Weyerbacher beers. +++12 oz brown bottle. Very nice picture on the bottle - a shallow thing to notice, but I like the effort. I had looked forward to trying this beer for some time. The description on their website promised some liquid glory. It poured a very cloudy pale yellow. There was a small white head that quickly faded as did my hopes. But the aroma brought me back with strong notes of citrus, black pepper and spice. Then came the flavor. Tart. Sour. Dry to the point of crying out where is the sweetness, any sweetness?! There was a hint of lemon that grew as the beer warmed up, but even this could not save the brew. There was even a vaguely skunky nature to the aftertaste. As it warmed a dry spicy flavor began to creep in, but sadly is was a bad spicy flavor that only heightened my disappointment.

Overall a relatively uninspiring IPA. +++Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a hazy copper color with a small white head. The aroma is flowery and hoppy. The flavor is bitter with a little bit of grapefruit. Relatively mild and definitely lacking in balance. Smells better than it tastes.

The aroma is sweet spicy with notes of cloves, prunes, and raisins. The color is dark amber and it has a small orange head. The flavor is very sweet and very warm with notes of malt, caramel, raisins, and plums. A wonderful beer.

Bottled. Dark black with rich creamy head. Fruity aroma of tobacco, plums and dark chocolate. Sweet with rich, soft maltiness. Pleasantly hoppy with salty, bitter finish.

Thanks to alcfron for the trade. Pours almost black with a medium thin dark beige head. Thin but sticky lacing throughout. The aroma is like a raspberry truffle. Rich and creamy body with very little carbonation, the flavor consists mostly of raspberry, dark chocolate, coffee and toasted malt. The finish is very creamy and not overly fruity. The alcohol is well-hidden as well. Not much to complain about here other than it being a little thinner than I prefer, still this is a solid Imperial.

A good beer when fresh but an absolutely incredible one when it has a few years of age on it. I have aged cases of this one for up to 7 year and at it’s peak it stands up with the best from Belgium. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a dark bronze color with no head. The aroma is sour and fruity. There is a thick texture with an alcohol burn - reminiscent of a smooth cognac. A hearty malty flavor with a strong touch of maple follows. The alcohol burn is a bit pronounced on the finish. // update 8/2007 - I just tried a 4 year old bottle of this one and after having aged it is up to the standard of any Belgian Quad I have encountered. 8/4/10/5/20
